This is my first IBM. It is an X60S with Intel Core Duo L2400 processor, 2 GB RAM, and a 100GB HD. It does Windows 7 Ultimate loaded on it.

I have to say I love it. The keyboard is the best I've ever used. The small size is very handy. I like how it even has a SD card reader built-in. I don't have a problem with not having an optical drive. Battery life (I have the 8-cell) is pretty darn good.

No more lugging around a big and heavy laptop for me. Anyone else have one?

I was lucky enough to get to write the X61s review for NBR. I'd have to agree the keyboard on the X61s was excellent. I always tell people looking for a cheap netbook, the X6x is the way to go. I went with the X200 over the X6x mainly because I dislike XGA and the ease of the AFFS upgrade on the X200. Congrats on the machine.

I have to admit, I was tempted to get an X60 myself as they're so cheap to acquire on the second hand market yet the build quality on the X60 just means business.

If I was really desparate for a netbook then I get one of these instead of the typical plasticky affair that you get on the shelves nowadays. It's just much better value for money in my opinion and probably much more capable too.

Why is the X60S so rare?

The X60 is the one with the DVD drive?

Anyway, I would rather go ultraportable and sacrifice the optical drive. Don't really need one. I'm going to use this X60S as a always-with-me, on-the-go computer that I can stop at Starbucks or wherever to surf the web or wherever. (I can't afford those new smartphones or their monthly fees)

The X6x series are pretty good... I had an X60s that I ended up putting an X61s motherboard into. Great system, which was the reason why I got my X200. They're excellent netbook alternatives with a bit more power and the battery options keep 'em running. I only disliked the XGA.

x60 is pretty much the same as the X60s but slightly thicker and uses a normal voltage cpu i.e. T2400.

In Australia, X60s is not that common.

The keyboard on the X60(s)/X61(s) is also the best keyboard I have experienced on any ThinkPad. It is rock solid. All the X61 laptops I have owned came with the NMB keyboard. That combined with a small frame with no room for flexing, makes for a top notch keyboard experience. Significantly better than that of say T400, R500, T500 (with or without solid plate keyboard).

so how do you find the keyboard on the T61, R61?... so what brand of solid plate keyboard are you using on the R500 and T500? The NMB version is pretty much the same as the one used on the X6x/s laptops.

NMB keyboard is rare is hen's teeth now in Australia, last time i tried to call in to get a new keyboard for my friend's X61, and i asked whether i can get the NMB keyboards for him. The depot told me that most of the Australian stocks are all chicony keyboards.... so i kind of miss my NMB keyboard on the X60, which one of my friend swapped with me for a new Chicony keyboard, which is pretty bad in terms of tactility..

I may be exaggerating a bit as I have more sensitivity in my fingers than most.

Nonetheless compared to the solid plated NMB keyboards used on i.e. the T61, I still find the NMB keyboard on my X61 or X61s more solid and generally better to type on. Or rather, this is probably more related to the structure the keyboard rests on than the actually keyboard itself.

There is a slight hollow sound from certain areas of the R500 or T500 even if there is no flex due to the solid back plate. This hollowness is not there on the X61 probably due to how small and cramped everything is.

Bottomline, I am yet to find a better keyboard experience than the one from the X61(s).

maybe a 600x or x30x? The T400 with the supporting bracket and the solid plate NMB keyboard is extremely good.
