So, I have had a T61P for 2 years now. I do writing, Rhino CAD, and occasional gaming, for which the T61P has done a pretty good job with. I dual boot Linux to use engineering software (Salome Meca)

Since buying an S10, I yearn for a single machine to do both.

    What I would like is:
13" inch display, matte!, 1680x1080 or better(!!!!)
    3GHz Dual processor
Discrete Nivida chip, equal or better than T61P, and faster than the T400.
Capability to hold 8GB Ram or better.
    Webcam
1 Express32 Slot, or at least ESATA
    Keyboard befitting the Thinkpad name.
Bigger trackpad. The thingie hurts my finger to use.

If the T400 had a better graphic chip it would be tempting, but if I recall correctly it's not even as fast as the 14" T61P 128MB chip. Yet, I think that compact machines survive better in the wild.

They would have to be really thick to accommodate that cooling and even then...who knows...

Sorry, half of those won't be happening any time soon (if ever) since they aren't really practical. The closest resolution would be 1600x900 in that size. Speed is a poor marker of performance for most tasks, especially now that the i5 and i7's will be released with speeds around half that. 8GB sticks will be prohibitively expensive when they do come out and no 13" as of yet has more than 2 memory slots. Most 13" notebooks (including Lenovo) already have webcam and eSATA will be implemented in the next generation (only in the current T400s). While there are more powerful GPU options, Lenovo won't be putting in anything better than a 64-bit card in their 13" line to keep their size/weight down.

For most design and graphics jobs speed is almost everything; and that is the backbone of the W series.

Two RAM slots with 4GB each would be sufficient. Even the T61p can do 8GB RAM.

It does not matter what others are doing; with so many people buying smaller machines, someone is going to want a fast one.

Ultimately, computer makers have to give people a reason to buy something that costs more than a netbook.

You do know that all current systems (PM/GM45) can support 8GB of memory right. If there ever is a W series less than 15", it won't be introduced in 2010...

From a thermal engineering point of view and with the current technology in mind, this W300 would likely have a TDP of around 80 w + just from the CPU and GPU, not accounting for the heat output from other components.... unless this laptop is unimaginably thick to accommodate a large fan and heatsink, which defeat the purpose entirely.

Not very practical at this moment, maybe in the future when the manufacturing process is further reduced..... in a 13.3 inch format anything more than 50 w TDP is probably not a terribly good idea.

Also, what you want to be put in the laptop, will make this laptop too expensive for Lenovo to sell.... which is not going recoup the initial investment.

In addition, the T61p with 14.1 inch LCD have a FX 570 that is only half the vram and half the bus speed (64 bit versus 128 bit) inorder to keep the heat output down.

Unfortunately, 13 inches is way too small for CAD, or that consider the Lenovo engineers. So the smallest W you will see will be most likely be a W4x0, and it wont be as powerful.
Sorry, I want the same, but it wont happen lol
Power consumption and heat dissipation are major concerns on 13 inch laptops, and workstations consume/produce a lot
