Hi, I plan to use this as a portable computer obviously, but also to watch movies in a hotel room, my own room, etc. How good/bad is the mono speaker?

Anyone have experience compared to the Asus 1000H eepc's "dolby" stereo speakers?

    Use headphones for movies.
The x200 mono speaker is only good for regular spoken word, but its placement is problematic (ie: if it's on your lap, it can get covered up).

Overall, the x200 isn't really "multi-media"-ish compared to other consumer oriented HP and Dell laptops.

The volume is also very weak. I wouldn't use it for any movie or music. However, I also think that all laptop's can't really be multimedia anyways, haha. I also don't think the output of the x200 sounds very great anyways. It is sort of dull and uneventful with Etymotic ER-4p (which are very efficient).

its good enough for me and i use M-Audio LX4 speakers for my desktop.

i didn't expect too much from it, but the volume is decent. i always have a pair of earphones handy tho (SHURE E2C). as long as u dont have the speaker blocked (no brainer), i think you're fine to watch a movie in your hotel room.

The speaker on the x200 is pretty poor. Its placement is less than ideal and it is underpowered. Headphones (Etymotic ER-6i) work just fine however. If you like the x200 but want better speakers you may want to look at the x200s or x200t. The x200s still has a mono speaker in the same location but it is 3db louder. The x200t has stereo speakers that are still on the bottom but very respectable for video playback or its intended use as a VOIP platform (it can also be converted to a slate and held with the speakers on top to increase the soundfield). Of course, the x200s and x200t do carry a substantial price premium over the x200.

no problems with the mono speaker... I'm satisfied with the sound... it's loud enough unless people are deaf. Also... you're in a hotel you're pretty much limited by your sound output either way.

Think most people are thinking out of the context....

simple as this... if you want to watch a movie it's sufficient enough.... if you want quality sound.... the question is pretty much irrelevant.
