    Hi All,

I just got a y580 with the SSD. I plan on upgrading it to Windows 8. What is the best way to handle this considering the Y580 has the Rapid Share and SSD?

Do I just go through the normal Windows 8 upgrade process? Do I have to unlink the Rapid Share and then re-link it after the upgrade? Should I just install Windows 8 to the SSD?

Ideally, I would just like to run it as an upgrade, but I could do a new install.... I just got it and all I really have on it are Steam Games.

    Thanks...

Are you going to buy a Win8 Upgrade version or a Full version?

Either way, clean-install is usually your best bet.

I am going for the $15 upgrade offer. How would I go about a clean install with the SSD sharing thing?

    same rules.

you have to unlink, then install, then link again, assuming the rapiddrive driver is compatible with windows 8.

Ah. Ok. That is a worry about that driver with 8. I have been reading through the user's forum and now I am thinking that I might want to but the Crucial M4 128 or 256 mSATA SSD. So, now I need to figure out if I should install that at the time I upgrade to win8, or install it before hand and move win7 to it.

I seem to recall you mentioning that you posted a guide on how to move Win7 to a new mSata SSD. Do you have that link?

    Thanks

    Mike

Awesome... Exactly what I was looking for! The instructions talk about using a Windows 7 DVD, which I believe my y580 did not ship with... (I will have to recheck the box.)

I made the Factory Default Recovery DVDs, but it is my impression that they will not allow me to install a vanilla Windows 7 on just the SSD? Will they?

If not, can I just borrow a friend's OEM disk and use the Windows code on my laptop to activate it?

Another Question. If I am going to pop in a new 128GB SSD and reinstall windows on it, do I even need to worry about decoupling rapid share?

Could I just take out the 32GB SSD, Replace it with the 128GB, then install Windows 7 on the SSD and format the 1TB as a data drive?

yeah, you can download the windows 7 iso and use unetbootin to make a usb install disk. just google it.

you can use the key under your laptop to activate, or use some other sneaky way to activate it. It's all on google.

if you plug in your own ssd, there is nothing to unlink. just format and install, and delete the big partition on the hdd. But keep the 20gb OEM partition. You can still use that for onekey restore.

I have a Y580 with the 32GB SSD and a 1TB drive. Installed Windows 8 to the SSD but cant merge with Rapid Drive.

I could use the drives separately but I don't know if 32GB is enough for a system drive. If I do go this route is there anyway to upgrade the 32GB SSD? Thanks

32gb is enough for the OS and a few programs.

yes, the 32gb card is upgradeable.

Thanks Link. Any idea how to perform that upgrade? I don't see the 32gb drive when I take off the back of the computer. I just see the 1TB hard drive.

See here two images that show you the location of the msata. It's a tiny little card to the left of the 1TB HD location. The little green rectangle on the first image below (not the size of a regular SSD)

Ok so it doesn't look like I can upgrade with a regular SSD then. Hmmm.
