I just received my 15" ThinkPad R60 with the Intel T2300e Core Duo and 512MB DDR2 SD RAM (PC 5300), CAS Latency 5. I have got a 512MB stick of Transcend JetRam (PC 5300, CAS Latency 5). I have read how to upgrade the RAM, but the process looks complicated. It first says to remove the battery, then remove 4 screws underneath the notebook, then the front top panel (the area where the touchpad is), in order to add the extra 512MB stick.

I would want to know if it would void the warranty of the notebook. Does Lenovo have stickers inside the body which would break when you unscrewed the bodyshell here, or some other method to find out if you've changed the RAM?

Also, is the way written in the pdf manual the only way to change the RAM?

I would really appreciate help on this issue, as I don't want to waste the extra 512MB stick.

Upgrading the memory does not void the warranty. It is not that hard. Here is a photo of the Z61m with the wrist rest popped off if you want to see what it looks like.

Boy, that was a fast response. Thanks for the pic, Zaz.

Also, do ThinkPad's come with any way of identifying that you have opened the system up? Would just like to clarify that one up before working on mine.

So, to upgrade RAM, do you have to remove the bottom panel or simply remove the screws to loosen up the top part, then add RAM, put the top back in and fit the screws back in?

If I remember correctly, you just take off a few screws and pop the wrist wrest off. Since memory is consider user upgradeable taking apart you machine to the extent you need to access the memory does not void the warranty.

If your machine is recognizing the extra stick, I would say it is in correctly.
