The X200 doesn't have a number pad and I don't see the number lock key on the keyboard. How does one type the em-dash with the X200 keyboard?

    Thanks!

There is a number lock key. Activated by "Fn" + "scroll lock". Once the num-lock is on, you want to hit ";" for the em-dash.

Thanks! However, when I go and press the ";" key in Facebook, I still get the en-dash. Why is that the case?

Try typing "alt" + "0151". Once you let go of "alt," it should result in an em-dash. Keep in mind that the numbers have to be typed on the num pad though. Sometimes typing "--" results in an em-dash as well, but I assumed that you tried that already.

    Hyphen: -
    Em-Dash: — (using the alt 0151 method). I don't have a Thinkpad on hand.

    The "alt+0151" method doesn't work. :(

You tried typing "0151" on the NumPad right? Can you at least type a "—" on the forums here?

    I can! ———

    Seriously though, try:

    1. Activate NumLock: "Fn" + "Scroll Lock"
    2. Push and Hold "alt"
    3. Type "0151" (or "mjij")
    4. Let go of "alt"

the Em-dash should now appear. Note that if you are doing it correctly, NOTHING should appear on the screen during steps 1-3. This works on the desktop where I am typing, don't know why it wouldn't for the X200.

Finally! A person with a Thinkpad! ;-) I was relying on screenshots of a X200 keyboard. Never thought of holding "Fn" though. Good one. Odd that you would have to do that.

Believe it or not, it doesn't work. I'm not asking whether it works for a regular desktop keyboard or not. I'm asking in the context of my X200's keyboard.

I activated numlock, press and hold both alt and fn keys, but it still doesn't work. This is unbelievably frustrating. The only way it'll work is if I copy and paste it from your post.

I don't understand what you meant with step #3 so I omit it.

These instructions sure work on x220.

    1. Activate NumLock: "Fn" + "Scroll Lock". When you do this, you'll see an icon with '1' on bottom right of your screen.
    2. Push and Hold "alt".
    3. Type "0151" (or "mjij") (Keep holding Alt key when doing this)
    4. Let go of "alt"

my instructions are confusing in retrospect. charm's rewording of it is much better.

If you have NumLock on and Fn held down, does typing numbers that appear in "numpad" area of the keyboard make numbers?

Ok, I followed your instructions and I can definitively say that pressing and hold "alt" and "0151" doesn't work at all. However, if I press and hold "alt" and press "mjij", then it'll work!

Yes, but 0151 doesn't work at all.

1 I think charms meant 0151 on the numpad area, which would be mjij
2 It seems that mine/charms instructions worked. LenovoGringos did not since making numbers on the numpad on some laptops like you X220 require you to not only activate numlock but hold down Fn.

Oh, I see what you are doing there. Just for future reference the "numpad" always refers to mjkluio789 = "0123456789" NOT the numbers above the letters. When people say type "0151" on the numberpad they mean "mjij", but with the numlock activated, hitting mjij displays 0151. Pseudorandom came in before me, and yes, I didn't realize that the Fn key had to be held down. Kind of odd, because you might as well always have numlock activated. It also makes it much more convenient though.

Ok, now I know what you mean. Regardless, I'm glad that this has finally been resolved! Thx again!
