Well one way is to switch the LCD display off with Fn-F7. You will need to do Fn-F7 twice to get back to the LCD display only mode.

Or you could go to the screensaver and put "Blank".

(Does this turn it off, or is it still on but just blanks it?)

First of all, ALL computers will have the display turn back on at the slightest movement of the mouse, so it's not just a Lenovo problem. Secondly, that setting in Device Manager is for when the notebook is sleeping, not just having the monitor turned off.

I haven't tried this myself, but it appears to be very useful: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd2.html

Bananaman@ fn + f7 doesnt turn off display for me for some reason

zephyrus@ no it doesnt turn off display either, just puts it blank as u said.

kltye@ 1. that is untrue, u can simply turn off display on some notebooks and have a rest. then u can turn it back on just by using same combination of keys....
    2. that is likely second untrue, as far as im aware it should wake pc from any kind of sleep mode (ie sleep, hibernate, display off etc)

Can you just press Fn+F4 and put it into sleep mode? Then in order to resume, just press the Fn key.

Well, I don't know of any notebook computers that can allow you to turn off the monitor and not have it turn on with the slightest movement of the mouse since the LCD isn't a separate piece of hardware with it's own switch; it's hardwired with the rest of the laptop.

    Is this a ThinkPad?

Either your Thinkpad Hotkey drivers are not installed correctly, or you are not using a ThinkPad! Go here to find your Hotkey drivers.

Says who a Lenovo must be a ThinkPad? :p

My IdeaPad is Fn+F2 instead of Fn+F7. ;)

naab, check your manual for the Fn combination keys...

I just tried, I think this is what you're looking for, using the Fn combination key to turn off LCD, mouse movement won't turn it back on.

Yoiks U R right! There is life outside of ThinkPads!

I just looked at a Lenovo IdeaPad U110 and it is Fn+F3!

AFAIK ThinkPads have always been Fn+F7.

naab, as stewiegriffin said, check the manual. Or look for the function key with the screen off | screen on symbol.

Yeah even within the IdeaPads line can be different, all the IdeaPads Y series are Fn+F2. I just looked at another popular N100 and V200, it seems like it's Fn+F5? lol the button logos, they all look different in each series.

I've got thinkpad r61i (sorry not to mention earlier)
    My FN functions are:
FN + F3 = shut off display - however mouse vibrations would bring it back in an instant
FN + F7 switch between notbook display and external display - I heard rumor somewhat I could shot off display this way, but I didn't manage to do it.

Arkitekt@ Asus can do that, and I don't see reason why other notebooks couldn't too.

As I said in an earlier post, if Fn+F7 does not work, make sure the Hotkey Utility is properly installed.

FN + F7 does work. It opens presentation director. Not turns off display. However if anyone knows how to use that to shut display off, you are more than welcome to let me know.. (if that is possible to do)

Then set Presentation Director to output to the external display and see if it works.

Wouldn't it be easier to disconnect the USB mouse and hit FN+F3 (you have to set this too) to shut off the monitor at will? Or buy a wireless mouse that can be shut off by the touch a button.

Having the computer's HIDs bump you out of display off mode makes sense, I'd be wholly annoyed if my mouse didn't bring up my display, is display off even an ACPI sleep state (S1-S5)? If not it couldn't be hardware "controlled" right?... and I doubt there's a software/OS workaround but who knows.

Better yet: just disconnect the USB mouse whenever the laptop (or its user) should be taking a nap.

Disconnecting the USB mouse is *the* most freakin'-A simple remedy to discipline unruly notebooks "having such childish difficulties with them" as the OP says with zero (0) settings to muck about with.

Don't forget to plug the USB back in when it's time to get back to work.

I've seen numerous topics about this on other forums, people having same problem, but haven't find single solution that would work. Sure I can disconnect usb mouse, and I'm doing it, but its hella annoying. Plugging and unplugging it like 20x a day, and I'm worried not to screw up usb ports doing that.. Would prefer some more practical solution :c

and about fn+ f7 as said I haven't happen to success turning off display using it yet.

I don't understand what's so hard for you to read the manual. There is no "display off" Fn in your R61 like on the Y series, all you have is Fn+F7. You will need to change the setting in the Presentation Director so it doesn't start when you press Fn+F7. This is from your R61 manual that I found online:

If you use FN+F7 to display to external display only, then the display on the laptop itself will turn off and try to output the external only. To get back the display on your laptop, cycle through the FN+F7 options again.

Otherwise just disconnect your mouse and use FN+F3 which can be set to turn off your laptop display. Or close the lid.

    That's already 3 options.

Just close the lid, but make sure you set it so that is turns off the monitor and does not go into standby.

I wonder how everyone comes with such a smart solutions, like unplug your mouse or close the lid.

Well to make it clear: I dont wanna keep plugging and unplugging mouse or closing lid like 20 times a day im having to have display shut on and off.
Don't you find this little retarded ? It keep shortening life of my thinkpad, and soon I would end up with broken lid or f*ckd up usb ports..

    to stewie:

I don't have an external monitor attached therefore it doesn't allow me to do that and thinkpad lcd wouldn't go off. Maybe if there was a setting or scheme how I could cheat this.

I don't really like your attitude, but your laptop will still allow you to output to an external monitor without one attached. Your laptop display will turn off.

    I have done this before.

Have you tried turning off the Presentation Director startup? You must disable it in the Presentation Director's setting.

Click Start --> All Programs --> ThinkVantage --> Presentation Director.

Then try to find the startup option in there and try to disable it.

Afterward, when you press Fn+F7, it won't start PD anymore, instead it will switch between displays. Even if you don't have an external monitor attached, it should still work. All the laptops I've seen so far will this function works even without an external monitor attached like elfroggo stated, your screen should just turn blank(off).

I guess you mean "Fn + F7 settings" which sets what would happen after hitting Fn+ F7 combination. This allows you to choose three options:
"Show me to choose display scheme menu"
"Toggle between my normal display settings and following display scheme:" (you have to choose one)
"Switch display output from the notebook LCD to external monitor to both (and then repeat)

    - Option one: just displays menu
    - Option two: Allow you to choose scheme
    - Option three: When I do this it just flashes my LCD display twice and thats it..

hmmm... strange, to be honest, I'm out of advises...

No there isn't, but you can create your own scheme where you can set it that way. But as said before when I set this and push fn+f7 it just says: "Error" " Your computer is not attached to an external monitor or projector. Attach one and then select this scheme again." This seems to be Vista message, so possibly it doesn't happen in xp, and could be set somewhere, but I have no idea how.

I think you should start a new thread with a title " R61 users, please help" to attract more R61 users for comment, because I believe there should be more R61 users on the board than this.
