Lenovo said there is no more 4-cell batteries for Thinkpad x61s, so they put 8-cell battery with my order. They only said it's 8-cell, without mentioning "high capacity". I see on their site the x61s comes with only 8-cell high capacity batteries, and wonder if the battery I got is high capacity or not. How can I tell? I looked at the battery carefully but can't find such info.

Does the Tabook list any of the watt-hour capacities that you can check?

Can't find info in the Tabook, but I can see the tiny prints on the battery that says

    FRU P/N 42T4633
    ASM P/N 92P1174

Does this tell anything? They don't appear in the x61s parts page on IBM support site

the 8-cell is the high-capacity battery.   there's no such thing as a standard-capacity 8-cell.   the standard-capacity battery is the 4-cell.

Hi erik, but the Tabook above shows that 8-cell battery lasts up to some 9 hours, while the 8-cell "extended life battery" lasts up to some 12.5 hours. Perhaps the extended life battery is the "high capacity" one?

I guess the extended life battery means you need to add other one.

The 9 hours is maximum for current 8 cell battery, you will get about 6 and half under normal usage

look on page 96 of tabook under X60/X61 accessories.   it lists the " X60 High Capacity 8-cell (cylindrical)" battery and " X60 Extended Life Battery".

the former is the only 8-cell battery ever offered.   the latter is a wedge-shaped prismatic battery that clips onto the bottom of the X60/X61 and adds up to 12.5 hours of runtime when used with the 8-cell.

again, there's no such thing as an extended version of the 8-cell.   you're getting the one and only version of the 8-cell ever designed, manufactured, and sold to the public.

erik is correct. Our marketing content refers to batteries as Standard, Enhanced, and High capacities. For the X6# series, there are only 4 (Standard) and 8 (High capacity) cell main system batteries with no capacity variation in those batteries. There is also an "Extended Life Battery" as erik mentioned, which is a "slice" battery that attached to the Ultrabase port on the bottom and adds additional runtime to the main battery.

For example, the T6x/T400/T500 widescreen systems have 4 cell (Standard), 6 cell (Enhanced), and 9 cell (High capacity) batteries.

Tim, thanks for making it so clear. It would be good if Lenovo put such descriptions somewhere on its web site.

like i said above, it's in the thinkpad PSREF (tabook.pdf) on page 96.

you can also find all four X6x notebook batteries with images and full descriptions on the lenovo sales website here.
