The machine is T530 which comes with a NVIDIA Optimus 5400 discrete card.

I am running a few virtual OS using Vmware, and I wonder if this discrete card can enhance the performance of the virtual OS (Win7)?

Are there any software which notifies me when an NV Optimus kicks in?

Yes, in the Nvidia Control Panel, in the Desktop tab, select "Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area" and in the notification section of your taskbar, you'll see a little gray square. It becomes colorful when you're using the Nvidia card.
