Sorry if this is a dumb question but can't you just close the lid to put into sleep mode? Or do you need to press FN + something? I have been just closing the lid and opening it to wake up my X61s and didn't know if this is not a good idea...

    Thanks!

    its a fine idea :)

but do you have vista? if so, do you have to press the power button to get it back to your logon screen?

if you do have vista and thats not happening, then chances are you don't have any video drivers installed and closing your lid isn't doing anything (if your screen turns off when you close it, then yu should be fine)

Right click the battery in the system tray (assuming it's there). Select power options. A window should pop up and on the left there "choose what the power buttons do" and "choose what closing the lid does". That will allow you to change and double check what the buttons and closing the lid does. From the factory closing the lid puts it into sleep. Also pressing and releasing the power button does this. You can also use Fn+F4. I prefer hibernation on battery power instead of sleep. Sleep seems to still eat up a fair amount of battery.

Amazing - thank you so much for the info! I have XP Pro and closing and opening the lid works wonders.

I stopped that closing and opening of the lid because sometimes I would just close it to move quickly hehe, and didn't want it to sleep.
