I'm very glad that - despite of the sleek design - the X300 has a DVD-burner, but it is a rather noisy basterd :).

So every time I boot, the DVD drive checks if there is any disk. That's why I want to disable this.

So I went to my BIOS, there you can see the following:

Obviously the '' ATAPI CD0:MAT****ADVD-RAM UJ-844-(PM)'' is the dvd burner. What you see now is the default order. I've changed the order by putting the ATAPI down, and I thought I had to place it behind the '' ATA HDD0: SAMSUNG MCCOE64G8MPP-OVA-(S1)''. However that didn't do the trick.

To cut a long story short, I've tried some other changes and eventually I put the DVD RAM in the list of ''Excluded from boot order''. But still, the DVD checks if there is any disk with every boot.

    What can I do?

Is it really that annoying? You could replace the drive with a 2nd HDD caddy, although I'm not sure if there's really one of those avaiable for the X300, but I assume you would be using the DVD burner anyways.

    P.S. In your signature says:
    T61 14.1 > Had to be replaced

    why? Im just curious

No it's not that annoying. The T400 does it also (a bit less). I was just curious on how easy I could 'fix' it. It's not really a complaint since the drive works like a charm.

Offtopic..: well I was a real pain in the *** for Lenovo. To cut a long story short, my T61 14,1 had a CPU whine and I wasn't pleased with the fit and finish of the palmrest and battery. They replaced the T61 with a T400, so that's hands together for Lenovo. Turns out the T400 had the same issues, although the cpu whine wasn't so bad. Just sometimes the T400 peeped a bit. However I wanted the X300 and I got a very good deal. So the T400 goes to my brother since it still is a 100% working laptop.
I'm just too much of a perfectionist, and that's something I've got to work on :).

I think it has more to do with the DVD drive powering up than it does with checking for a disc to boot from.

I have a slim external USB DVD drive, and when I plug in the DC adapter it makes the same noise. Even before I plug it in to the USB port itself.

I guess you should be happy that you don't have the slot-loading DVD drive from the Dell XPS m1330:

It makes the same noise when the laptop turns on - and I know that because I had one for a couple of weeks before I returned it and decided to get a Thinkpad instead :p At least Dell's service was friendly and let me return it without a problem lol..

@Faruk, hm yes that would be a plausible explanation.

That m1330 seems like a living creature.. damn.

Ok, well then I will just leave it as it is :). Unless I can tell the computer not to power up the DVD untill I open it. Will look for some additional info.
