Hi,
just bought t42 to replace my d620 Have a question - can i enable poweplay even though my laptop is connected to AC power? Right now poweplay tab says "POWERPLAY is currently inactive. Tha graphics adapter is running in high performance mode. POWERPLAY is disabled or AC adapter is plugged in".
Driver version is 6.14.10.6476, date is 25/08/2004, OS Windows Xp Sp2.
I tried to underclock GPU using ATItool but it results in random crashes. Maybe there are some other tools that can underclock properly? And if so, to what level is it safe to underclock from default 260/180?
I need to underclock GPU because my fan is always on when connected to AC. As as i found out this is one famous problem with thinkpads which is REALLY annoying. I solved it by installing ACPI scripts for NHC so that now i can control fan speeds depending on temperature so i want to keep GPU as cool as possible.
Thanks for any ideas.

Update: installed latest drivers from ATI for 7500 (Catalyst 6.11, driver version 8.252.0.0, using DriverHeaven's Mobility Modder tool) - this enabled POWERPLAY setting in NHC. NHC in fact has the option to enable powerplay when on AC but it doesnt work, unfortunately. When i ran from battery NHC shows that GPU is downclocked to 66/66. But as soon as i connect power cable it's back to 260/180.
Oh, and i had to uninstall CCC - oh my god, how i hate that bloated piece of crap. CLI.exe was taking 70-80% of CPU each 2-3 seconds.
So... i still want to know if it's possible to enable powerplay when on AC power. Does anyone know? -
what do you mean enable powerplay ? i have T42P might be useful feature for me too, although i use ubuntu linux no windows
Thanks -
I figured out how to do it and wrote a summary here:

edit: Oh, you run linux... Then it'll be much more fun for you Good luck, this is why i dont want to deal with linux as my home os.
I heard that SuSe has much better support for all this stuff compared to Ubuntu. Some people on Ubuntu forums were saying that they can get ~6 hours from battery on SuSe and only ~3 hours on Ubuntu. Supposedly because Ubuntu doesnt use powerplay by default.
How to enable POWERPLAY on mobility radeon 7500? (t42, fan always on problem)
