okay. so I have an edge e420s and I am trying to create recovery disks so I can restore the computer to factory default settings. (I am using the 'create recovery disks' tool from lenovo.)

I have an external hard drive that can be connected to the laptop via USB. Can I use it to create recovery disk since I don't have blank DVDs.

    Thanks.

The tool should ask you whether you want to use an USB device or DVDs.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Yeas it does. I was wondering if there would be any problems using an external hard drive instead of a USB stick.

I don't think so, as long as the laptop can boot from the HDD it should be fine. But I never tried that, so be aware if the tool formats the HDD or not before writing on it...

When I tried to boot in to the external harddrive the screen says.

    grub rescue>
and some thing about that the partition does not exist.

I have a dual boot setup. Should I try to remove linux first?

Are you sure you are booting from the external HDD where the R&R image lies? I would imagine that it does not matter at all what you have on your "normal" HDD as you are strictly using the external one...

Or it means that the R&R image has not been created successfully.

yeah. That's what i was thinking. It still gives me the grub message. Windows only lets me make one recovery disk because only one is allowed. I am scanning the hard drive to see if there are any problems.

It all worked out. I created a boot cd before. So I booted from that CD and used the external harddrive to restore the computer. Thanks for the help.
