Been fiddling around with this thing for a while now and so far no such luck. Even tried to download the R&R software which does not work for windows 8. Anyhow, looking for a way to back my system up so I can get an Msata.

So far the only way I have found is:
Lenovo Tools -> System Health and Diagnostics -> System -> Backup

^is this the correct way to back this up? Somewhat regretting the Windows 8 selection instead of Windows 7.

Hmm. So it isn't possible to do this on DVDs? I'd rather not have to go out and buy a 16Gb USB stick if I can avoid it.
I think info is more secure on optical disc than USB-chip (have had a few bad experience).

I asked the same question in the non-public section of LF and got this as an answer:

    Good luck.

You can use DVD (or USB) if you don't check the box on the first screen that asks whether you want to copy the factory recovery partition. In that case, the size of the the load on the recovery DVD (or USB) is less than 500MB.

Anyone recommend any third party recovery DVD creator for windows 8? Norton ghost? Acronis? I really need to do this soon before I start filling it up with junk.

I tried to use the factory windows solution to making a recovery with my external USB Hd. I was able to do it successfully but when I installed my Msata SSD, it kept saying "system image not found". I got fed up with it not working so I called tech. support. They will send me a thinkpad recovery DVD for windows 8 (which should have be included in all their windows 8 systems).

Meanwhile the Crucial 128mb msata sits as a partitioned Logical drive with a usable capacity of 119GB. I did a few file transfers and it's very quick.

One of the posters here or at the official lenovo forums remarked they went back through the trash and found the Windows 8 Recovery DVD in the miscellaneous stuff that came with the machine. You know, there's always a pack of regulatory notices that comes with each machine. Did you check that carefully?

The Lenovo instructions and the W8 recovery media utility say you have to use a flash drive as the recovery medium if you are copying the recovery partition. Maybe the utility won't work properly with an external HD. Just curious, did you or did you not copy the recovery partition? If you didn't, maybe that's an additional reason you couldn't restore onto a blank SSD. (Not sure about that; never tried it.)

Well, if you can get factory recovery disks from Lenovo, that should be your best short and long term solution. I don't understand why manufacturers cheap out on this. Recovery disks used to be standard fare.

I bought a wifi range extender for 29.99 and it came with a cd maniual. All thinkpads should have a cd/dvd recovery Considering i paid $900 for this latop. But either way, i will have one in the mail shortly.

I used the windows tool to do the backup and i assumed it copied the recovery partition. It was checked from what i can remember. I might try it again tonight after work.
