I am thinking to buy a Thinkpad X200. I have this question about the two tasks: create the set of Product Recovery disks and create a backup of the entire hard drive.
How can I do these two things if there is no optical storage device? How do you perform the two tasks do in the same situation?

I am pretty familiar with the two tasks with my other Thinkpads since they came with a DVD recordable.

    Thanks for your input!

    Cheers!

Maybe it's possible to create an .iso of each recovery disk and transfer it to another computer and burn it from there. Never done it though. Otherwise, you'll need a USB CD/DVD Burner to create those disks. Or call Lenovo and order a set of recovery disks, I think it was $40? I could be wrong, it's been a while.

To clone the hard drive, hook up the x200 hard drive through a USB to SATA interface and connect it to another computer.

You mean that with a single external USB DVD burner, I can do both things?

You mean a USB DVD burner is unable to do this?

    Thanks.

Nah, you wont be able to use a DVD Burner to clone a hard drive. If you're talking about basic backups, sure you can burn backups onto DVDs, but it's much efficient to get a external hard drive for that.

I'm assuming the reason why you want to clone is to save the recovery partition along with your windows installation.

On my T500, I do use its DVD recordable to create a full backup of the hard drive.

Did I misunderstand something? Or do we talk about the same thing?

    Thank you!

You should be able to do the same thing with your x200, given that you have a USB DVD Burner. You might even be able to generate an .iso of that file to transfer via home network to another computer, and burn it from there. I guess it really depends on which application you're using to perform the backing up.
