    Hello,
So I just got a new laptop and I want to get on the internet to download somethings, but we have not gotten a wireless router yet. So how do I connect if all I have is a cable motem connected to our desktop? Srry if thats a really stupid question.

You need either to move the desktop's connection to the laptop, or buy a wireless router, or an ethernet switch.

yea the only solution i see for you is to unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the desktop and plug it into the laptop.

This question is not stupid at all.
Just bring your laptop over to the desktop or cable modem and unplug the cord that runs from the modem to the computer and find the port on you laptop that it properly fits(Which is called the ethernet port, DON'T GET IT CONFUSED WITH THE MODEM PORT ON THE LAPTOP).
Once plugged in the internet should work on your laptop.
After your done on the internet with your laptop just plug it back into the computer.
If you run into any problems just reply :)

one thing to remember, most cable modems only allow for one MAC address. Meaning you will probably have to unplug or reset the modem after you connect it to the laptop. This is the case for most modems and Comcast in my area. As stated, a wireless router is the best way to go.

I bought a cheap 20 dollar wireless router for just the laptops in our house. Seems to cover the entire house, and it has the enough functionality that I don't have to tear my hair out. I tried using my desktop wired to the router, and it seems to get the full bandwidth of our internet. So really you could just get a 20 dollar router.

A wireless router is a good investment. Not only will it allow you to connect more than one computer to the internet, but it will provide you with a hardware firewall (and NAT). Plus it frees you to use your laptop anywhere within range, which is kind of the purpose of a laptop ;)

true, but usually the provider only activates one at a time.

    DBL,
do you know how to check your connections status? check your IP? did you do a reset of the cable modem after you plugged in your laptop?

#1 - Have you loaded the ISP software on your new Laptop? Also until the router comes your ISP modem - Cable/DSL may be USB+ethernet!

if both PCs have wireless then you can use one computer that direct connects to the internet and it can act as a wireless router to the other

check out the articles on internet connection sharing. Some smartphones with wifi can also act as wifi routers

its is a temporary solution, till your wireless router gets in

    this link describes the idea

No I have not loaded any software on my laptop at all. Should I? Where do I find it? Also my modem doesn't have a usb port.

What if I just went into starbucks/panera and used their wifi? What do I need to do that?

What ISP (Internet Service Provider) do you have! How did you get the Internet going on your Desktop?

I have AT&T DSL. You will need to have the ISP sofware to get an IP address!
