    Hello IBM experts

I have a little problem. I have just bought a new R52 and now I would like to change the hard drive on it, with the old one from my R51, because the R51 runs 7200 rpm instead of 5400 rpm on the R52.

Physically this shouldn’t be any problem, but since IBM has the Rescue and Recovery system and since R51 and R52 doesn’t use the same drivers, I have been told to make an Image file of the system/ drivers/ or something like that… in order to be able to make the change?

But how? Help will be much appreciated… thanks

You should be able to burn off a set of recovery discs on your new R52. Then use those discs to restore your R52 to its original state with the new hard drive.

Unfortunately, the only way the a Hitachi 7200 rpm HD will run in an IBM R52 series is as a secondary drive in an ultra-bay. I've been told that IBM is the only company to make notebooks such as the R52 that are not compatible with Hitachi's 7200 rpm drives. I've tried a raw install of WinXP SP2, restore CDs for the IBM R52, Norton Ghost from a 5400 rpm drive, and no luck. It runs just fine on the ultra-bay and you can install a second OS on this drive, but that's all I've heard is possible at this time. Crazzzzzzzzzzy!!!

That's crazy if true. What logic is there for not running the 7200 drives?

to create exact copy of the hidden partition, you can use linux and dd (its very very simple program, that you can use to make exact image of the partition)

I used Norton Ghost to clone my drive; wouldn't boot up. Try xxclone. It worked for me. Make sure that you just boot up and clone your HD, otherwise it can't copy files that are in use (ie Outloot pst files, etc). Good luck.
