    Hello,

Im looking for an answer from people with past ibm/lenovo experience. I am looking at getting a used x40 + accs. It still has a warranty according to the seller till december this year.

Can someone provide feedback on the reliability or the fail rate after the warranty expires from their past experiences?

Also, how is the customer support in regards to issues and RMAs?

    Thanks,

    Val

Actually ive decided against the laptop, but am still curious about the fail rate after the warranty ends.

My reasons for avoiding this laptop is simply because the HDD isint upgradeable (1.8in HDD @ 4.2K) and I dont want to pay for a SSD when they finally appear on store shelves (for an ungodly amount of money).

The hard drive can be upgrade, but won't spin faster. ThinkPad are amongst the most reliable notebooks, but as always when buying refurbed, it can be a little more chancey. Ask the seller for the serial number so you can confirm the warranty.

I bought my T21 as a refurb in 2003. It is still running as well as the day I purchased it. I think overall build quality is so good with Thinkpads that they live well past a time when most other consumers have had two notebooks, hence the high resale value.

I work in a repair shop. R40 laptops have heaps of problems, so, if the x40 is built on the same platform, avoid it like the plague.

well I have check on ebay alot on used laptops and rarely see much "broken" one on sell, esp the x40 one. But it also depends on how the current function of the laptop is and if theres one problem, then it could lead to another one...ect.
And also depends on the previous owner of the laptop.

But the hard drive is very hard to avoid death.

Only thing I can tell is I just bought an old x31 like 3 years old and running for 3 months and as good as new.
