How much quieter is the T42

Hey,

I am writing this message from a brand-new T43. Exactly what i want except for the constant fan. The fan itself seems to rev up every 5 seconds or so, creating a pulsing-like sound. The air intake under the IBM logo also makes a pronounced noise. I know there are programs created to help control the fan, but being a novice to all things computer, i don't really feel up to the task. IBM Canada is still selling T42s, although no cheaper than the new t43s. People say they are quieter. Does that mean that the fan actually shuts off for most of the time, or is it continuously on like the T43?

I rarely hear the fan on my T42. Every once in a while when it is on the dock it will turn on. I set it for maximum battery even while plugged it. You might want to try that. It will run at 800Mhz, but if all you are doing is the internet or office you'll never notice.

one further question: Im currently using a 14' T43- on the T43s and T42s does size make a difference in terms of fan usage, or does the 15' T43 also run constantly?

My fan on the T42 does not run constantly. It is also very quiet. I have a 15" screen with a 7200 rpm hard drive. It's so quiet, sometimes I have to put my hand near the vent to tell if it is running.

 

I think that the fan on my T42 (15") is always on, but most of the time it's whisper quiet. Only accelerates briefly, and even there it's only audible in a silent room.

Ive decided to give the T42 a chance, based on the replies ive recieved on this forum and my growing love of the t43 (sans F***ing fan). I use my laptop alot in the library, so ANY fan noise is an issue. Although i don't think i have much choice, the T42 i will order has a "M" 735 1700/400 MHz processor- would this be quiet, or would a slower one help keep the fan off?
Ive also experienced a 'pulsating' noise in the T43 fan that other T series models have had. I know there is a patch from IBM for the T42 to get rid of this pulsating. Has anyone used it and does it really stop the fan from speeding up for a split second every 5 seconds or so?
One more T42 question: The T43 emits a sort of "sucking noise" from around the IBM logo and the fingerprint reader- Does the T42 also do that?

The air conditioners make considerably more noise than the T42 fan.

I have a 1.8GHz 745. Fan noise isn't present.

Never experienced the pulsating.

Haven't noticed on mine.
