    How much hard drive space does fresh Vista install require?

    My experience on my Lenovo Y410 tells me around 15GB.
    But seems like way too much.
    Is this the correct ball park figure for a fresh Vista install?

    My memory is close. For some reason 16 gb comes to mind.
    Rememeber there are requirements for the paging file and the hibernation file + recycle allocations and Restore points. You are also going to need room for applications and data so a minimum of 16 gb is not all that unreasonable for Vista.

    Vista takes between 6GB and 8GB depending upon what version of Vista you have.

    Most of the time the problem begins when people don't understand that the size of the hard drive that is advertised is not really the size that shows up on your system. The actual size that is reported by Windows is roughly 7% less than the advertised size.

    For example, if you purchased a "100GB Hard Drive" the actual size of that hard drive under Windows is actually 93GB. So now subtract another 8GB or so for Vista and you will show that you have about 85GB of hard drive space available.

    So people say "I only have 85GB of hard drive space available after a clean install so Vista took up 15GB of hard drive space!?!" The answer is "No, you only had a 93GB hard drive to start with.

    I don't that's the question. I seem to rember that Vista won't install in less 16 gigabytes.

    That's right. Vista requires that much space to install because it needs the extra space to extract and expand files during the installation process. However, after the install process is over it only takes up 6-8GB of space.
