How many were planning to buy a Thinkpad but will not because of the off-centered screen?

My friend owns a T60 that he purchased last year. After being able to use it for a couple hours, I was sold. I told myself that as soon as the T61 was released, I would purchase one. And then Lenovo decides to dip their hands into an IBM product and make the screen off-centered. What I don't get is how people are in an uproar about Lenovo replacing the IBM logo with Lenovo ThinkPad to the point where they are buying stickers to cover them up. And yet, an off-centered screen is fine and dandy? I refuse to purchase a laptop with a lop sided bezel no matter how good the keyboard is. I have yet to see a competitor's laptop with an off-centered screen. I am not going to spend over $1000 for a laptop that is visually disconcerting. Anyone else?

i never really noticed it when I saw it. If you are OC, yeah you'll notice it every time you use it. Honestly, you're buying a thinkpad... it looks like a piece of crap black box full of parts to begin with. If aesthetics bother you, you should prob reconsider a dell or hp

I am not happy about the off centered screen as well but I dont think that is gonna stop me from buying one.......I dont see any other laptop that falls in the vicinity of my choice ( with the exception of MBP )

I thought the same thing as you Justin but...honestly when are you looking at the Bezel of a screen when using ANY computer, you are looking at what you are typing. The only time you will notice it is when you look for it. I have never once looked at the bezel in my desktop computer or laptop.

maybe i'm not into unchanged 1980's black box designs, but anything with a bit of color, even silver or white, looks ok to me. I'd never buy a dell though, even if it was made by jessica alba and sealed with a kiss

Thinkpads are 1337 looking, they're stealthy. I love the all-black design, never gets old.

The simple black design of the Thinkpads is elegant, its not elegant if you are looking for something like a Alienware or a voodoo..... :D

I don't know how many people here actually have to put up with seeing Dell units. I see Latitude units at work everywhere and they are not most pleasing to the eye after some wear and tear. But who really cares about the off screen so much that they wouldn't choose T61 for that. I worry about this unit working and working well....if I wanted something pretty I would do what vedavin said....get Alienware, Voodoo or another Mac.
For me, I care about how solid the unit is and the quality of material used....which is to be determined on T61 but from what I have seen in the past, I think this ThinkPad should be still the business quality that I expect.

Go watch a video of the T61. There are a few on youtube of some overexcited guy opening his T61.

Point is, I guarantee you won't even notice the off-centered screen unless you try to.

And if you like cheesy designs with flashing designs and whatnot, get an... Asus, I think. Or Acer. Whatever.

It doesn't bother me because the screen is lined up with the keyboard, which to me is what's important. So, with that said, to me I don't see it as off centered, just that it has extra compartmental plastic on the left side, which is used for other things related to functionality.

The off-centered screen is not a big problem. It is only slightly annoying. My biggest gripe with the T61 is its abysmal battery life without a good reason why it has such crappy battery life. If it had a really nice video card or some other good reason, I would not care.

But i think the build quality has also gone down in T61 compared to T60 since they are built by compal. I prefer to buy a T60 and not the off-centered T61.

I chose symmetrical screen over a small performance gain :)

I happen to think that inspirons look ultra sexy... who wouldnt want extra buttons to play around with while the screen is down?

The older Thinkpads didn't exactly have a "centered" screen. I am noticed recently that my 15" Thinkpad T43 (with the fabled FlexView display) also has a slightly off-centered display. Furthermore, the frame is asymmetrical... the horror :)

Now it comes from the same assembly line as many other cheaper manufacturers like dell. Apparently we can expect the same quality.

    Dont you think so?

Why not. Dell Latitude laptops are just as reliable as Thinkpads. (Except for the keyboard quality.)

There were similar speculations when Lenovo has bought out IBM's notebook division.. but so what?

Other than that, I don't see anything wrong in T61's build quality...if you see then tell us...any facts?

Otherwise, I don't care about rumours, if you do, then Dell is your best friend, right?

Just because it comes from the same factory doesn't mean that quality will be lower. It all has to do with the parts that go into making it, its not like because they are making them alongside dells, they are going to put dell crap in our Thinkpads....what your saying makes no sense.

Look on Lenovoblogs, there is a video of someone riding over a new T61 w/ a motorcycle at a promotion event - they then open it up to finding a perfectly working Thinkpad.
