I finally got around to updating and installing a bunch of my own software on the T60p I recently purchased. But guess what, I have about 96 processes running! The T60p came with Vista Ultimate.

Out of the box I have about 80 processes running.

What's up with this? Anything I can remove/delete?

Vista Home Premium. 38 processes running. I have tweaked it heavily to get it down via services.msc.

My old HP DV9000t only had about 60 processes out of the box. And after I configured everything, it only has about 65 processes in total running.

What's up with this 100+ processes thing? This is all slowing down the computer considerably.

Do you guys have any recommendations on which ones I can get rid off? I deleted almost everything except the Thinkvantage suite.

If you do then http://tweakhound.com/vista/tweakguide/page_7.htm is what I used to learn what each service does and which ones I set to manual and which ones I disable. To get to your services, click the little window buttoon and type services.msc and the services window will come up. Each one will tell you the name, status etc. Right click to change from auto, manual and disabled. Hope this helps.

No problem. The same applies for Ultimate...Good luck and do one thing before you make any changes. Make screen prints of each page so if you make any changes then you can always have a guide to revert back to. You can use staroffice 8 or word to paste the screen prints in. If you have any questions about a particular service then post and I can help. =)

    Really appreciate the help!

The T60p came pretty barebones as far as preloaded software goes. I removed everything except the Thinkvantage suite and that left about 80 processes running.

Can that Thinkvantage suite really account for that many processes? It seems a bit ludicrous.

No it doesn't account for the processes. The processes are background things that are going on that may or may not be needed. One good example is print spooler. It is automatically set to run as startup, but I don't have a printer hooked up so it's unnecessary for me to have it. Now one little process is not going to boost performance, but 15-20 less things going on in the background is where the real help comes from. Plus there are things you don't want running at all, like remote registry, that are security issues.

Thanks Wingsbr. I'll look into which processes are unnecessary on that page you linked to.

44 on a slim custom Vista build. I have a couple programs open though. I think my custom XP had like 20 or something. Firefox is also using 200MB O.O. For some reason my 2.0.0.3 Firefox leaks a lot. I think it might be flash that leaks though. I'll close all of my firefox windows except one and it'll still show like 500MB sometimes. Damn leakage. Anyway...

You do know that its not the same as with XP right?

A fair number of processes is not a bad thing with Vista. I run 75 at idle on my desktop and it is extremely fast.

Just a heads up for everyone trying to lower their start up programs... check out a program called WinPatrol. In runs on both XP and Vista. Secondly, it's free. Thirdly, it also tracks cookies and allows you to control processes and services.

Its name describes it pretty well, actually. It basically monitors your start up programs and notifies you when anything changes. It asks you whether to allow of deny, which is very handy when installing programs.

Note: Next tip only applies to Windows Vista, not XP.
Also, another tip. Most people are not aware of this, but you can set some programs to Delayed Start. That allows the program to automatically start, but forces it to wait awhile before doing so. You can do this very easily in WinPatrol, but the feature is built into Windows, so you can do it in Services.msc too.
