Since I'm to be using this notebook as a DAW, recording, editing, so I really need to know how loud the comp is going to be.

I'm particularly interested about HD drive noise, anyone have any experience with this?

    I'm configuring it with 3GB memory, a T8400 cpu, and 160GB 7200 RPM HD.

    Get a 320GB 5400 rpm,it would be as fast as 160GB 7200 rpm.

Do you have information about the specific HD models in use? I don't see how that could be the case.

That's not exactly true. Seek times will be a bit slower on the 5400RPM drives even if the throughput is relatively close.

Have you checked out SilentPCReview? In my personal experience with hard drives, it tends to be a bit hit or miss. You can have two drives of the exact same model, one will be noisy the other not. It's sort of luck of the draw.

So you're thinking I should buy my HD separately?

Hard drives noise isn't the issue but fan noise which BIOS likes to vary speeds a lot up and down. But that is fixed with tpfancontrol

Get a 7200 rpm 160Gb drive - don't beleive the guys saying the 5400 rpm drives are just as fast or faster. I have both in santa rosa thinkpads and can tell you boot and large application launching is noticable with 7200 rpm.

I disagree, I changed my 80GB Hitachi to a 320GB Samsung and the noise is a bit louder (before the loudest was the fan, now it's the hard drive), and that's still at 5400rpm.
