My second T500 fan is making loud noises now. The first one was replaced in the second year of a three year warranty. Any idea, as to how how long do I have before the fan ceases to work?

Do you know why it is making loud noise? Is the fan blade hitting something? Does it need some WD-40? I had a huge graphic card for my desktop that had a squeaky fan and WD-40 solved it.

    I'd never spray WD-40 on a fan/heatsink, but that's me.

Sewing machine oil is the way to go if one wants to lubricate the fan, and it doesn't smell as strong as WD-40.

    My $0.02 only...

I think it's a bearing issue but I am not sure. Good point on just getting a replacement for $10 and not having to worry about it.

It shouldn't hurt to spray WD-40 if you have some on hand.

It varies between specific fans and systems. I've never had a notebook fan fail on me, but as ajkula66 mentioned, they're fairly inexpensive to replace if you need to do so.

WD-40 can help, but it's a low grade lubricant and it won't be a permanent fix. Something more high grade will do a better job, if the noise is due to a bearing.

Fans tend to last quite awhile, so make sure it's not a cable or something else smacking against the blades. And to second what others have said: they are inexpensive if one needs replaced.

At one point my X200 fan blades were rubbing against the heatsink fins. At least that's what I think was happening, since moving the fan slightly would make the noise stop (I had taken the laptop apart to examine it).

I am stuck on the diassembly for this repair.

Is there a secret to removing the bezel? I removed the two screws from the top inside, i.e. the ones that hold the silver metal plate which appears to be fastened to the underside of the bezel. I can free up the sides of the bezel but the whole back side of seems locked in place.

I've run tpfancontrol on all my thinkpads and I run them at a constant rate because I think it's better long term than pulsating the fan and I don't notice audio at 1-3 setting, pulsating is annoying. I've never had one fail except for the t410, we've probably had 15+ at work that had fan error message.
