Ignoring HDD failures, how long should a T42 last ?
Put more concretely, what is y such that 90% of T42s will be working in year y without failure (not taking HDD failures into account) ?

It's funny how you said you wanted 6-year warranty because you heard most TP's fail in 3 to 6. Now you want a used T42 (~3 years old)?

My dad's still using an 8 year old thinkpad 570e and it's still running strong for office and e-mail stuff. I think if you treat it well it can run for many years.

I'm typing on a close to 7 year old T21 - the only non original part being upgraded RAM. I take care of it but I don't baby it. It is still in amazingly good shape. Everything still works like new with the exception of batteries of course.

I have a T21 too that works fine, even tho it's beeen dropped and had coffee spilt on it a couple of times. I use it for surfing sometimes, still can't beat XGA for just plain browsing i think. I got a spare battery for the T21 with only 14 cycles that reports 2.5 hours of charge. Interested?

I have a t42 which is my main laptop. I feel like I should write to Lenovo for being on a video. I have dropped my laptop down a flight of stairs... twice. Once it was in suspend and once it was on. I've also dropped it from waist height onto relatively hard carpet about three or four times--- to prove the build quality. I've never worried about washing my hands before using it- so its got a lot of dirt and sand in it as I'm a landscaper. It's gotten residual water splashed around it, left in hot cars.... you name it-- it's had it happen. Anyways I've never had any problems and the computer is running strong as ever. I bought it almost four years ago and I'm sure it'll last another four. But I'm ordering a t61p as I have the funds and need a new toy.

    But I love my T42.
