I made an order on my credit card and cancelled today. How long is it likely to be before those funds are not encumbered?

The safe estimate most companies give you is 5-7 business days.

OK, here's another silly real world question about encumberment.

Although I ordered a machine and it was approved by my bank, my account has never shown any withdrawal or reduction in balance. Is this normal? It's as if there is some virtual money somewhere. Supposedly I have money in my account but I can't spend it?

Lenovo will charge your account when they ship the computer.....

With regards to a refund of your order, Lenovo has a track record of sending orders out after you have cancelled them. This is due to the lack of a communication conduit between Lenovo's manufacturing operations in China and Lenovos Sales Staff in the US/India etc. Chances are you will receive your computer, and you will have to send it back and then wait an additional 7 business days before you receive your refund. Personally I have noticed that Lenovo ships quicker once you cancel it rather than not cancelling. I had a cancelled order that shipped quicker than my regular order.

I doubt it on this order. It is due in January 08. I will hound Lenovo everyday for my refund, since I just ordered a really loaded T61p from another source at a price lower than the employee discount price.

As of yet there is no confirmation of my cancellation.

"Lenovo will charge your account when they ship the computer....."

Does this mean I could spend the money as I desire right now?

Yes you can, they only confirm that the money is present before starting the build process. As the above posters mentioned it will only be charged when the Laptop itself is shipped.
