REVIEW LENOVO THINKPAD NOTEBOOK T410S
by: Martina Osztovits 22/03/2010
Slim Fast.
Intel's new developments do not make even with the slim 14.1-inch T-Series grip. Moreover, some T410s integrate, for example, our test device, touch screen and SSD. As the business unit cuts made by Lenovo in our tests, click here.
Lenovo ThinkPad notebook T410s
Now that we've already had two Arrandale models of ThinkPad T-series tested, the T410 and the T510, there are now the T410s our tests. In a T-series model, one should be expected according to the manufacturer an a BALANCE relationship between mobility and performance. Moreover, it was placed in the T410s value on a lightweight and sleek design.
It offered a variety of trim levels. One is to decide for or against a touchscreen, with the offering of our test unit Touch Screen functionality. But even with the performance components a number of options are available. In terms of processor core about one-i5 520M, as in the test device, or a slightly stronger core i5 540M. According to manufacturer information in at least the top model is to offer one switchable graphics. It can be used after each performance or mobility needs, either the HD GMA integrated graphics chip or the more powerful Nvidia FX 3100M. Interestingly, on Lenovo's US-listed site at the time but no T410s model with separate graphics card.
Also, our test model must be an integrated GMA HD content graphics. As always, battery life, performance and emissions from the built-up components are dependent. Our test model was a T410s - 2912-3AG, with SSD. Other models in these areas have very different characteristics.
HOUSING
The Thinkpad is similar at first glance, much has already tested the T410. In detail, showing itself not only in terms of interface equipment differences. It is with a height of 33 millimeters and a weight of about two kilograms a little slimmer and slightly lighter than his colleague. For the entire transport weight did we mention 340 grams for the power adapter.
In terms of color, it raises are in any way from other current Thinkpads. It is black with red TrackPoint, blue Enter key and a blue ThinkVantage button. The same applies to the good stability and torsional rigidity of the screen lid and base unit. Only around the Ultrabay slot, the housing is under pressure to something.
The two metal hinges hold the screen in any screen position, can not prevent a minor Nachwippen by adjusting the opening angle, but altogether. On the other hand, the hinges for a one-handed opening and closing is smooth enough.
Two double hooks on the upper screen frame holding the laptop securely closed during transport. The sliding opening on the front edge of the base unit is easy to use, but knickst something.
FACILITIES
The Thinkpad T410s is quite different from the T410 in terms of port facilities, and distribution. There are a total 3 USB-2.0 interfaces, one of which is exported as a USBpowered, one more than USB- eSATACombination.
In VGAaddition, also has a digital video port found the place. HDMIOver which not only images but also audio data could be transmitted digitally, the device offers are not. The only one audio port that is a combination audio interface for headsets.
Lenovo has not forgotten this is a mandatory feature in business notebooks. One of the party is again a docking port on the bottom. Thus the device can both be easily integrated into existing work environments, they also show the port range to be extended.
Left side: USBfan, combined audio, card reader
Rear: VGADC-in, RJ45, USBpowered, e-SATA USBcombo, display port, fan
Right Side: Wi-Fi power switch, Ultrabay slot, Kensington Security Lock
A 82577LM Intel Gigabit NIC provides for the appropriate infrastructure for high-speed wired Ethernet connections. By CentrinoUltimate N 6300 AGN Wirelessmodule, also from Intel, can be made via Wi-Fi hotspot network connections. In addition, the Gobi, 2000 USBHS-9205 Mobile Broadband device built by Qualcomm, a broadband modem. Prerequisite for its use, but it is a contract with a service provider. The associated SIM slot is found, as usual, in the battery compartment. Although the RJ-11 connector has been saved for a modem in comparison to the T410, you can still speak of a good communication facilities. Supplemented by a 2 MP webcam video conferencing with business partners is therefore no obstacle. In communications equipment, however, there are some options, so you should check before buying these in detail.
In addition to the usual Kensington security slot to prevent theft have been incorporated into the T410s and a fingerprint reader TPMand a Module. Data loss caused by vibrations when you need the built-in tester storage and no risk: it is a SSD has no mechanical parts. In addition, the keyboard of the device is splashproof.
An accessory such as Lenovo has been short lived. That will be very convenient tools installed under the name of ThinkVantage, with which it, inter alia, can quickly restore itself to create DVDs. In Europe, the warranty on ThinkPad T-series devices is standard 3 years. In the U.S., however, offered no additional charge only 1 years warranty.
INPUT
Add Touchpadto keyboard and TrackPoint are there to describe the T410 nothing. All three point to typical Thinkpad qualities.
Keyboard
Most annoying at first, that Ctrl and Fn key has been exchanged. Otherwise, the device also features a standard layout with clear buttons grouping. Like the T410, the Esc and the Delete key has been lengthened and the Insert key removed from the group at the Delete key. To feel and mechanical properties of the keys there is nothing auszusetzten.
Touchpad
The Touchpadpoints on one slightly dimpled surface with good sliding properties. The Touchpadbuttons are already in the turn, slightly slanted housing part. They work quietly, smoothly, but nonetheless provide sufficient clear feedback.
TrackPoint
Believe the red TrackPoint as usual, because it allows for some settling-in period, a very precise control the mouse pointer. The corresponding buttons are back Kippbuttons. They are silent, and speak good.
Let us now in terms of input to the actual specificity of our T410s. " Its screen responds to touch with finger and digitizer. The latter was however not included, unfortunately, all the tests which were carried out with a finger.
The control system works well enough as long as completely covers the fingers to click the object. The work with a digitizer in this respect is probably far more comfortable, especially because one of the object that you want to click on, still looks. With multi-touch gestures can also for example, directly on the screen will be scrolled and zoomed.
May also be entered via handwriting. The handwriting recognition works reasonably well despite the finger tip. In addition, it is capable of learning, which should, over time the results are better. So comfortable handwriting input with the digitizer also may be an experienced data entry is certainly faster with direct typing. Even more than any word must be checked whether it was then correctly identified.
DISPLAY
Installed, a 14.1 Customs WXGA+ screen with LEDbacklight by Lenovo with the monitor ID LEN4036, which is as already mentioned above, to touch. Now, let us, however, employ the basic parameters of the screen as a display device. The screen offers the same as that tested in the T410 one 1440x900 Pixelsresolution and thus a 16:10 format. Typical business laptop, of course, came only a matt surface in question.
Info
High: 283 cd / m²
Average: 245.6 cd / m²
coverage: 67%
Black: 2.99 cd / m²
Contrast: 95:1
Distribution of brightness
While the ThinkPad can convince T410s with a very good maximum brightness, but that's about it. On average, there are still 245.6 but after cd / m²all, but for the upper central area was comparatively only a brightness cd / m²record of 188.8. This results in a below-average coverage of only 67%. What's worse is it the contrast ratio : 95:1is really weak. This is due to a very high black value of2.99 cd / m².
No wonder then, that black looks more gray and one would wish much fresher sound. At least, Scripture is presented clearly and without shadows. Even with the color gradient, which can move smoothly and without visible gradations into each other, can be satisfied.
Outdoors
When outdoors, the screen shows the Lenovo T410s against strength. Due to the good brightness and the matte surface is an outdoor work is no problem. Yet even this contrast may well be slightly higher.
The possible angles are notebooktypisch. Vertical occur as usual quickly perceptible changes. On the other hand can easily discuss several adjacent seat occupants share the business budget to relax or watch a DVD movie.
Modest compared to the pre-tested "normal" WXGA+ display of T410s can also make the multi-touch panel is no good ground. On the contrary, for the touch / pen input should be further restrictions on lighting and contrast suffered.
PERFORMANCE
Our test is based on the T410s as all the Intel Mobile 57 chipset QA. This means that you can outfit the laptop with RAMup to eight gigabytes. Our tester, however, were "only" a total of four gigabytes installed in the form of two two-gigabyte DDR3 modules. If need arise for a memory upgrade, will be at least one of the two memory chips obsolete. Such problems can also perform a layman via maintenance hatch on the bottom.
On the motherboard one Intel was stuck i5 520M processor, so the slightly weaker, which offered for the T410s, CPUs. It is certainly at the 32nm process produced dual-core processors. Configures the T410s one in Lenovo's U.S. online store, you will note, however, that there appears at the time anyway, only the i5 520M CPUcan be selected. Thanks hyperthreading four threads can be processed simultaneously. The turbo boost allows, if necessary, an automatic Hochtakten individual nuclei. So, one can expect one good computing power, which lies just over the same clocked Core 2 Duo processors.
Our test model uses only the built-in processor GMA HD graphics. Too big is the 3D performance that is not offered. At least the GMA HD supports hardware acceleration for HD video decoding. The details will be MPEG-2, VC-1 and AVC are fully supported.
The top of the T410s Series, according to manufacturers, however, an additional Nvidia NVS have built 3100M graphics card and allow a switch, depending on power requirements. -
Darth Lenovo: I have reduced the screen contrast; pray I do not reduce it any further.
*sigh* -
Agree the 95:1 contrast ratio is ridiculous, 10 year old LED are better than this. I'm wonder if it is some kind of a mistake, a typo maybe. Else I will consider getting the Edge 14 when it come out.
-
looks like identical screen to what they had on T400s. I am using one right now and I have to say that its a whole ton better than crappy screens found on non-s T400. Vertical viewing angle is a bit wider and screen is very easy on eyes and the screen reproduces colors a bit better when calibrated.
the black levels are however terrible, which makes this screen stink. My personal opinion - if you could tolerate LED WXGA+ panels on vanilla T400, the 95:1 panel on T400s is a slight improvement.
Right now I am ditching the 14" format altogether to get the wide gamut/decent contrast panel found on W510. 14" screens were always notoriously bad compared to their 15" competition. -
bummer that the screen is that terrible
i was hoping for at least a slight improvement, not a decrease in performance
think about it
it was someone at lenovo's job to, literally, scour the earth for the crappiest screen they could possibly find
a screen this bad doesn't just happen upon you - you have to seek it out
i just can't understand putting such a horrible screen in the flagship laptop
its official - i'll be waiting to see what dell's e6410 looks like before making a purchase
this screen is ridiculous - almost an insult -
Why not to look at the W series?
How is the screen on the T410 and T410S?
