Hey I am looking for a laptop for college.

I will be taking this to and from classes everyday, and it will be carried in a backpack.

    I cannot decide between a Y580 or a T430.

The Y580 will give me vastly more gaming performance, and I am a gamer, so that would be nice, but I am not sure about the build quality, how does it hold up? Will it be able to make trips back and forth?

The T430 will give me really good build quality, but not nearly as good gaming performance.

    Thanks,

I'm going to be lugging this to and from classes too. Really, it's not bad. It's about what you would get from any other consumer line. It's no tank, but treat it well with a padded backpack and some light handling and it'll last. The screen isn't as reinforced I would like, but I have no problems with any of the keyboard half as far as durability and such.

Same here I have to lug it to class as well.
My GF toshiba satellite has been dropped, thrown, and generally abused so many times and the only thing broken is a key that pops out not to mention she lets it get hot on the blankets blocking the vents and don't care. I hope the Y580 can withstand what she did to hers.

It feels pretty solid, I like the keyboard and it has a brushed aluminum top and pad it makes it more durable.

Fairly durable, but the trackpad kind of sucks...be sure to use a mouse for most things. They keyboard is really nice, but there is some flex on the left side. However, I don't notice it. I think it will last you unless you do not treat your electronics right.

I think the trackpad is a love/hate deal. Either you love that style or you hate it. I really like it and it is well built IMO, I also don't notice any keyboard or track flex at all compared to the DV6 that I sent back in June. I do use a MS bluetooth keyboard 6000 and mouse 5000 when Im at my desk but I don't have any issues with the built in ones when Im using it out of my office.

I think you and me are the only two who actually like the trackpad. Buahaha... to be honest every time I had to use a laptop I NEEDED A MOUSE no questions ask... I used to hate the mousepad. But with the Y580 is all the opposite.... Now I barely use the mouse.

Well, there is flex in the WASD portion of the keyboard. Thankfully it is not bad enough to warrant any complaints from my end. I have to agree with the trackpad. Some days I like it, other days I hate it. It is infinitely better than the ivy bridge dv6 I returned. I hated how loose the mouse buttons were on my dv6. It caused me to try to find repeatedly the sweet spot to press down, which led to some discomfort of my thumb joint.
