How does the Education discount work? I tried to call IBM to ask them but waited on the line for 15 minutes, I then left a message with a promise to be called back in less than 2 hours but never did hear from them. I'm sure they are busy because of the holidays but I need to get this notepad ordered. Do you have to have proof that someone is enrolled in school to get the discount? I also couldn't find this model on the education link. 28838QU https://www-1.ibm.com/shop/pc/personalpages/public/public/search/dsp_quick_search_results.cfm Maybe they are out? Here is a link to what came up for me as units that are available on the education discount https://www-1.ibm.com/shop/pc/personalpages/public/public/search/dsp_quick_search_results.cfm
Which units are close to the one that I was going to order? Thanks for all your help!

I just checked the education page - they still have over 100 in stock, so you should be ok. Don't bother with the search - I'm not sure how well it works. Just got to http://www.ibm.com/education/us/, then click the "student pc purchases" on the right side of the screen. On the next page, click "thinkpad notebooks" on the right side of the screen. That should bring you to a complete education computer listing - you should be able to find your model in one of the the Thinkpad R listings (picture here).

Hopefully that will work for you!

I am not sure how the education discount works. I initially thought that the school had to participate in the IBM program in order to get discounted prices, but after checking out the site and without going through the checkout process, I am not sure.

If you are able to get the discount let us all know. Be aware that with IBM you will pay tax and shipping costs which will probably end up near the mwave out the door price. The advantage with IBM direct is their 30 day guarantee.

I was finally able to get my notebook ordered. I went to the student link and the order process but when I went to check out the normal price came up. I called IBM again and this time was only on hold for 5- 10 minutes. I asked if I could get the educational discount as I was buying this for my daughter for Christmas for colledge. No problem ,they just asked me what school she was attending and placed my order, gave me free standard shipping. They asked if I wanted to purchase a leather carring case to go with it and I said "no thanks" They threw that in for free also! I did have to pay sales tax but I feel I got a good deal.I want to thank everyone on this site who helped me make a decision on which notebook to get. I'm sure all my question were a little annoying. Thanks again everyone!

Yep, you got it. Maybe it was something they were giving out as a promotion anyway? I don't know.
