The X220 doesn't have that easy-to-break lid latch any more. Good. But the way it's designed, it is very hard (much harder than before) to open the lid with your fingers (or your mouth or whatever parts of your body). Does anyone else have the same problem? The lid opening is extremely shallow. It's ridiculous. I wonder what kind of hands the engineer had.

Also, being that shallow opening, it's better to position it in the middle rather than on the far right side.

    The engineer had tiny hands..

The lid is difficult to open just the same.

    Security precaution for prying eyes?

Eh. I preferred the latches. I have some trouble with the X100e sometimes.

I sometimes have a bit of issue with the X120e, but mainly because I feel like I'm gripping the trackpad mouse buttons instead of the lip. For that reason, I kind of which the lip was towards the right side, as in most other Thinkpads. Not really a big deal for me, though.

I don't have any problems. As I am left handed I open it with my left thumb in the middle of the laptop. I am not using the little gap on the right side.

All they need to do is to make the little gap deeper, and more toward the middle. Or better, make a lockable/coverable button: press the button, the lid will open. When you want to make sure it will not open unintended, lock or slide cover the button. It's that simple.

Well, I open my X220 by getting a firm grip on the cardreader located on the left-hand side, and then taking advantage of the gap that is located towards the right where the diplay shuts - that way I can open the display reasonably easy.
This works pretty well for opening the lid with the laptop placed on a table or even when opening while holding the laptop or walking.

I recently bought this stuff for such a delicate work - Silverhill Nylon Non Marking Pick Worked good for me, so far. It's currently unavailable but there's plenty similar items on eBay as well.

It took me a few tries to get the hang of opening it, and there were a couple of times where I had trouble during that, but I haven't had trouble in months.
