When I close the laptop, shouldnt it go into sleep mode immediately? When I close it, i can still hear the fan running for about 10 seconds before it goes into sleep mode and the fan stops running. Isnt there some sort of option to make it so that it goes into sleep mode immediately?

I'm using hibernate on close and it usually does the same thing. Takes about 4 seconds after I close it.

Yeah, it takes some time. Just be patient. You can probably dink around and optimize the OS somehow or buy a faster hard drive... Or buy a Mac, their startup/power down times are pretty much instant (is this what you were comparing your laptop to?).

- Lenovo Power Manager - this is the recommended location. Look closely at the details for the power plans. Balanced is a good starting point
- Control Panel - Power applet. Like the Power Manager power plans, Windows also has default power plans with granular settings.
You don't need a Mac for this. A good ThinkPad is every bit as good as a Mac. -
I always assumed that few seconds was the fans cooling off the hot components even if the computer was essentially "off."
And my MacBook keeps the fans going sometimes for minutes after I shut it, so that's my two cents. -
Sounds like a software issue to me. My ThinkPads all go into suspend within a second or so of closing the lid -- but then again they all run Linux...

Sounds like you have Instant Resume enabled. Turn it off, and make sure the machine is set to go to Sleep when you close the lid under Global Power Settings in Power Manager.

Aren't hibernate and sleep two different things? Hibernate will definitely turn off the fan for good, but it has some cons (taking longer to boot, empties RAM, etc). I heard that some laptops keep their fan enabled during sleep. Laptops will never 'sleep' instantly. My Mac comment rings true though; Macs powerup/shutdown/sleep much faster due to OSX it's one of the things that they do well.

Do you have hybrid sleep enabled?
Sounds like its keeping the fans active while it writes its memory to disk.
Same idea with hibernate. -
I actually counted the seconds, it took 4 seconds from the closing of the laptop to the fan turning off. Maybe this is normal? I do not have instant resume enabled.
How do I make the laptop stop running after closing it?
