First, I want to say: I got hit by the win32 blaster worm

I want to completely format my hard drive and reinstall Window 7 again. Since the X220 does not have an optical drive, how do I do a fresh install of the operating system?

Even if I have an .iso image of Window 7, can it be done?

Even if I have done the installation, how do I register it? Do I use the Window 7 serial number that is on the bottom of the laptop?

What about all of the drivers for the laptop? Can I get it at the lenovo website?

You can create a bootable USB flash drive or buy an external optical drive. Why do you want to do a fresh install? Lenovo's stock Windows 7 image isn't bad.

Windows 7 should fine a good 80% of drivers, the rest can be downloaded from Lenovo's Support site. You don't need to register it, and yes you will need to punch in the 25 digit Windows COA to activate it.

Use ABR to back-up (and re-activate) your original OEM Windows 7 key or use the key that's on the bottom.

Back-up the 'SWTools' directory, all drivers you need are there.

Use a 'how to install Windows 7 from USB' guide like this one and you should be good to go.

Install Windows, install drivers and re-activate Windows, done!

    1. Download a copy of Windows 7 iso:
    - Home Premium (64 bit): http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65733/X15-65733.iso
    - Pro (64 bit): http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65805/X15-65805.iso
    2. Download this tool by Microsoft:
    - Information page: Microsoft Store Online
    3. Download all drivers you need from Lenovo (display + network card drivers are a bare minimum)
    4. Run the Microsoft tool (it will copy and unzip the iso file into your USB drive, which has to be >4gb)
    5. Access BIOS by pressing F1 during thinkpad boot screen, and change boot order of USB drive to No. 1 under the 'startup/ boot' menu - may not be necessary
    6. Follow instructions and Windows will install itself
    7. Install drivers. The network card driver is most important. After that, if you wish to obtain all other drivers/ software from Lenovo you can use 'System Update' (search google).

I got hit by the win32 blaster worm .

I just don't know how to get rid of it. It would not let me install any anti-virus program. It would not let me install any anti-malware program. It also would not let me use the internet explorer and so I cannot even use the internet. This worm is driving me nuts.

If you guys would show me how to get rid of this worm, then I don't have to format my entire drive. Thanks.

Can you revert to the factory load using Rescue and Recovery? More importantly, please write something that a worm could not write, so we can make sure you're human.

Watch if a worm is willing to write this:
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
I think I'll go eat worms!
    Big fat juicy ones,
    Eensie weensy squeensy ones,
See how they wiggle and squirm!

Anyhow, anyone know which drivers the "PCI simple communications controller" and the "SM bus controller" is for?

SM Bus Contoller sounds like it's related to the Intel Chipset Driver, PCI Simple Communications Controller would most likely be the Intel AMT driver.

Wait..if you got hit by a virus why didn't you just reimage it from the recovery partition? Alot easier than doing a clean install..
