Hi all - I just received a brand new R61 with a C2D T5450 and it has CPU whine problems when running on battery.
Nearly all of the "standard" solutions (BIOS power management settings, killing C4 and/or C3 in RMClock, etc.) are stopgap measures that seriously carve up the battery life, which is already the Achilles heel of this machine and not something I'm interested in compromising at all.
So I suspect I am going to try and get it exchanged, but I'm wondering how many of you have this issue before I subject myself to this process and/or decide whether to just cut my losses and fight for a full refund.
Thanks!

I have an X61s, and I hear some cpu whine when I first boot it up. Thankfully, it usually disappears after a few minutes of use.

I have never heard any whine with my machine.

i have seen macs and dells that have it
i thought it was a CPU issue
I dont know if you can get a notebook with a C2D that doesnt have CPU whine issues -

I seem to get to get this CPU whine at random times (on battery or plugged in), although it usually doesn't less more than a minute. It's also pretty hard to hear unless the room is otherwise silent or I put my ear close to the laptop's heatsink.

Same. In fact the only sound coming from mine is when the HDD is either writing or reading.

How common is CPU whine on Thinkpads now?
