    Hello folks,
I need to set up OS on Sun station which does not have vga card. It was designed to have onlly serial connections and station is 10yr. old.
Can you recommend how I can get serial port communication with this station from my laptop.
My understanding is that SL 400 does not have any serial port.

You are looking at a very slow connection speed (115 kbs nominal; actual will be much lower). Does your station have any parallel ports? This will allow for an almost 10 times faster connection. Also this tutorial may help.

And this shows you what other alternatives you have for a pc-to-pc connection which you might have not thought about.

I tried this particular cable and 1 more - non of it were working.
I was lucky I did not throw out my old dell which had serial output. So it did not need any of the serial to usb cables.
it worked. I tried to use that same setup and adding these to cables and it did not.
I would not beleive these cables next time.

I think you have to have software with it....

I have to have an Expresscard with hardware RS232 ports... these usb-serial devices are not that reliable. I interface with lots of serial instruments and while the USB ports work 85% of the time, there are some things that just need a real UART.

I have installed software which came with this exact cable. I tried this cable and 1 other with 3 laptopts - no was working.
If you do not have serial port on laptop - built-in or express card - i do not think it would ever work.
