I've heard some negative things said about this screen. I'm very close to buying a T60 Widescreen and would appreciate if someone who has used this machine could give some input. This machine seems to have everything I want, but I've heard a few complaints about the screen being dim and grainy. How bad is this? Is it that bad that it's unbearable to use or what? How is it compared to other screens?

I've received mine today, the screen is great! I just looove it.
I don't know why people are saying it is grainy. My friend owns a hp dv6000t and thinkpad's screen is way better. It has absolutely no reflection, which is very useful.
When the laptop comes , It will have a 16bit factory set display setting, so I changed mine to 32bit and I am fine.
    I got a great deal from buy.com
I am very happy with my lapy.

How portable/light is the laptop? I currently have a 13.3 inch and was thinking of moving to this 15.4, but I like to carry my laptop around college in a backpack. Would you say the T60 is portable enough to carry around once in a while? BTW, thanks for the reply!

As I haven't used a 13.3" before, I can't make a comparison. But I can say that It is portable. I carried it to school in my backpack today and It was very light, I didn't experience any problems with weight.
Although If you are moving from 13.3" to a 15.4" you will feel the difference more.

I would also suggest that you go to the nearest store and see in person if 15.4" will do for you.
If you are a female , it will probably be too bulky for you, if not and you don't mind carrying one pound more you will be fine.
Lenovo.com says it's the lightest laptop among 15.4" notebooks

I think it's quite bad. Have been thinking about buying one for 3 weeks now and occasionaly been going to the shops to have a look at it. Personally I find the display very important. When I press gently on the cover of the T60 the screen ripples. That already puts me of. Also, when I look at the display, I am not really impressed. It's not bad at all, but for the price you're paying, I think you should get something better. So, in my case, I am not gonna buy one.

Did you see the 14.1" ? Does the display ripple?
I think when you press gently every laptop ripples

I briefly owned one. I wouldn't say the screen is terrible, but it's dimmer than I'd like and dimmer than what a lot of competing machines have. Personally I feel that WSGXA+ is simply too much resolution for a screen of this quality - I found it really uncomfortable. Supposedly Vista is better about scaling text size within a particular resolution, so that might help.

The objective measurement of contrast were very good on one same. I don't have mine yet, nor can look at them in stores. I will let you know when mine arrives if this thread is still alive.

the screen, to my untrained eye, was very good. it was very comfortable to use and I could notice no dead pixels or anything. no complaints whatsoever.

i did return my 15.4 inch model though, because it was too heavy and unportable for carrying to school. i would highly suggest you get a 14.1 inch sxga+ model for portability, and the fact is you can get an equally configured 14.1inch model as the 15.4 inch, but you will have more baattery life and much, MUCH better portability. also, the 15.4 inwidescreen doesn't make THAT much of a difference; you're just getting like 3 more columns of excel in the view mode by sacrifising alot in terms of portability.

i will definitly get the 14.1 inch sxga+ model.

    15.4" notebooks are phased out.

    14.1" is where it's at.

I'm going to get an even smaller notebook in a couple years.

the T60 wide depends on the screen you get. Samsung makes a grainy, dim one while LG makes a superior, crisp screen. I have the LG screen and find it fantastic.

Also, the T60 wide is more portable than the 15.0, and slightly less than the 14.1 since they have similar footprints

I can't find it in the device manager.

you need to go to the stick on this forum, and click on the parts link. get your SN and Mn. then you need to find the model number located for LCD or Screen or whatever. It's like the first entry. then do a search here or on the thinkpad forums.

I had a 15.4" for 3 or 4 days, and then I returned that piece of crap. Light was leaking out all over the place, the screen was pretty dim even at max brightness, and it definitely wasn't worth the price.

Besides my screen problems, the 15.4" wasn't very portable at all. I knew that before I bought it, but it makes a world of difference when compared to a 14.1". If you have any intentions of carrying your laptop with you frequently, my advice is to go with the 14.1" screen. You can thank me later.

Where were you pressing on the cover? I am pressing hard on mine and can notice no ripples at all. I am trying to make the screen ripple currently by pressing on the back and sides of the cover but I cannot get my screen to ripple...maybe you played around with a defective unit?

I can't make it ripple either.
    I loooooooove my lapy.
It's a business class laptop, and the screen brightness is quite enough for business work

Odd - I own both (my mother has a 14.1 and I have a 15.4) and find them equally portable. since they have the identical depth, their footprints are quite similar. likely it is my circumstance, as width does not matter as I carry my laptop in a backpack

Well, I just ordered a T60 Widescreen, I'll let you guys know how it is when it arrives.

Also, how do I tell which screen I have (Samsung or LG)? Can I tell without opening the box?

See the thread I started about WS's screen there is someone who claimed you could just look at the PN on the order.

You're right, I actually pressed a 15,4" display from the Z series. From the T series, only the 14,1" model is available here (singapore) and that one indeed does not ripple at all.
