Mine is a 120GB 72 Hitachi. It's definately a bit louder than the 54 that was in my old Dell, but the performance increase is absolutely worth it.

It isn't annoying at all. Shut up already, johnny_1987! ;-)

Seriously, most of the 7k2 RPM drives I have been dealing with are pretty nice. Only a few are a little bit noisy.

And I can tell you that I would trade 3-4 times higher noise if it gave me 3-4 times faster speed than for a totally silent drive with the usual characteristics of 7k2RPM SATA/PATA!! :)

Mine is the 7200 RPM 100 GB Hitachi, and it is great. No noise, very fast, I really like it is. Mine is a t60 so I don't know if that is a different model than the T61's, not likely though.

The stock 7200rpm HD that I got with one of mine for work was so quiet that I didn't even realize it was 7200rpm until I checked. I think the 4200rpm on my old machine is louder than 7200 or 5400 drives I've used.

I've placed an order for a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB hard drive and will upgrade my T61 with it. Unlike a lot of people, I have the opportunity to test my computer with both a 5400rpm drive and a 7200rpm and can finally provide a real-world testing answer to how much battery life is affected, but only if Andrew lets me write a review (supposedly, too many reviews already in the pipeline for NBR).

Please do, that would be interesting information to know. It would also be nice if you (or someone) could quantify the performance differences as well.

I have the Seagate 7200.1 100 GB that came with my T60. The idle noise is louder by a little bit compared to most 5400 RPM HDDs, as to be expected. The seek noise isn't that bad, again just barely a little bit louder. I do have that marble dropping noise every now and then... sounds very muffled. The thing that I dont understand is the HDD activity - it is very slight such that my HDD never spins down - I have checked all my progs and can't figure out the cause of it.

If you're using Vista, try defragging your entire drive. Indexing and auto-defrag may be responsible for constant HD access, and once you manually finish defragmentation, indexing will be done as well.

If that doesn't solve the problem, it's possible that you might have System Restore set to manually create restore points. Check if your hard drive space is slowly disappearing even when you aren't adding files. If that is happening, disable system restore and delete all restore points already created.

HDD noise on AW minimal, on the VAIO I have to rely on the LED indicator cuz I can't hear it at all... The DVD drives are both horrendous, although not as bad as my old Fuji, the drive was actually vibrating in the case after 3 years... Imo the clicking noise from a HDD is nice.

Hmm thanks Johnny - I actually have Windows XP Pro, not Vista. But I will try the system restore thing...

EDIT - It isn't System Restore - which is disabled. I turned Indexing off - and I think that did the trick actually - the HDD is sleeping as we speak! ;)

They also commonly ship thinkpads with 7200rpm hitachi travelstars. I have a couple unfortunately. I say unfortunately because in the T41 days, these drives were notorious for failing. I had a couple of such OEM fail on my T41... an HD crash is a total bummer. Travelstars might be better now but I dont trust them anymore. But the old smaller 4200rpm drives have run for a decade 24/7 even subject to extreme heat. Noisy though.

wow. strangely enough, I had a 7K100 as an upgrade for my older laptop. It is very quiet and works perfectly fine, generates very little heat. I guess its a luck of the draw...

Man, am I the only one that can hear the drive? Mine sounds almost like a squeal. It's not loud, but just very high pitched. I don't know what the marble sound is though.

if your noises are anything like the ones listed, your drive may be defective. call up support before your drive goes completely.

Not quite as bad as that. It's almost like a buzzing or static noise when you listen carefully to speakers without sound. I guess that's to be expected with a 7200RPM HDD though.

Haha, I think I just heard the marble dropping sound. Wow that really sounded like a marble.

I pulled the 5400 120 Gb drive and put in a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160 Gb drive. It's fast, cool and quiet.

I literally can not hear it.

Seriously, am I the only one that can hear this or is my HDD just louder than normal?

I guess now that I threw in a Seagate 7200.2, I can vote and comment. It IS louder, but not too big a problem. And the only marbles rollin' around are the ones in my pocket.

I just put in a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 and have an annoying marble sound and can hear the disks spinning. I'm returning it for a Hitachi. Hopefully that one will be better. Anyone use both? I would love to hear your feedback.

My 7K200 Hitachi actually seems quieter than my Seagate 5400.2.

I just looked up the technical specs for both and they confirm what I'm hearing.

    I used both.
The Seagate is very quiet but with an occasional marble dropping sound. It didn't bother me at all though. The drive also produced a very distinct rotational vibration.
The Hitachi doesn't produce any marble dropping sounds at all, no vibrations either but noticeably louder when active.
According to benchmarks, the Hitachi model is overall faster compared to the Seagate one.

It sounds like the Hitachi is a good choice. The Seagate sounds are pretty low, and if I don't concentrate on them, they're almost non-existent. But now that I've noticed it, it's hard for me to tune it out. Thanks for your responses!

The HGST 7K100 that came in my T61p is fine.

The seeks are quieter than the old IBM Travelstar 20 gig 4200 rpm drive on my ancient Dell Inspiron 4000 (Celeron 800 mhz)

After I replaced the 5400 drive with the Seagate 7200.2 I didn't notice any increase in speed. Are there any settings or other things I did when reinstalling the OS that could be slowing it down? If so, I'd like to avoid them when I put in my Hitachi, which is supposed to deliver tomorrow.

Well, I installed the Hitachi 200 GB 7200, and I'm really disappointed. This drive makes more frequent marble noises than the Seagate did. I'm a little ticked off actually. Does everyone hear the noises and it just bothers some more than others? Also, does the disk actually break itself in and stop making these sounds after it's been working for a while? Please help!! I don't want to have gone through all of this only to reinstall the 5400 hard drive I started with. I'm so frustrated!!

Maybe it's not a marble sound then. I'm hearing the drive spontaneously make these noises. Some sound like a marble others like the drive is running even if I have nothing open. I bought both drives from OWC. Could it be the retailer?

I can't think of a good way to describe the sound. Maybe it's perfectly natural. I just know that my daughter has a 5400 and my 5400 made no sounds at all. I had to put my ear to the drive and then it only sounded like air moving. There was never any churning. That's the word I was looking for to describe the sound. It sounds like the drive is churning. Is that standard for the 7200?

Update. . . I decided to open the pro to make sure the noise was coming from the hard drive. I left the power on and opened it up and then the noise stopped. So I thought maybe the drive was in there too tightly. I closed it back up and the noise came back. So I opened it again, pulled out the drive and put it back in, only I didn't push it all the way against the left wall. I left some room there and closed it back up. Guess what?! No more noise!! It's so tight in there, and the drive has this reverberating sound if you tap it, so I think that was what was happening. If you try this, please let me know how it works out for you. After all the stressing about the noise, let me just say, "Ahhhh".
