hi, just bought T61 after reading a bunch of the reviews on here (thank you).

it should be a pretty fast computer, this is what I got it with:

    T7500
    2GB RAM
    100GB 7200RPM HDD
    nVidia NVS 140M 128Mb
    14.1" SVGA+ (4:3)
    fingerpring reader
    bluetooth
    Intel Wi-Fi 4965 AGN
    DVD recordable
    6-cell battery
    PC and Express card slots

    and Windows XP Pro :)

Right now I'm in the process of uninstalling that bunch or crap that came with the computer. After the first start, it was running 73 proccesses, but I'm getting those down fast (right now those are 65, but I just started .. lol).

this ThinkVantage I already see as ThinkBS, so it's getting removed as I type this. I'll leave the CSS as a trial (may get removed later though), and the remaining will be the fingerpring software and the HDD protection software.

the Norton was a good thing, but the fact that it's gonna expire in 90 days made it out of my computer. Its substitution - AVG and ZoneAlarm :)

The MS Office trial alrady got down in the drain, lol. A new office package is up to be loaded (maybe tomorrow)

oh man, I'll update what has happened afte I remove all the unnecessary.

and the battery lasted a bit over 3 hours after the first charge on full HDD load (installing and uninstalling software in the mean time)

those smartbutts at lenovo did not give me an operating system CD, so I'll have to deal with the product recovery CDs ... Well, the 5GB partition on the HDD will remain for now, eventhough I wanted to format the whole HDD

    Miro

P.S. the 4:3 version doesn't have a firewire port. But I never used it on my old HP laptop anyways

well, got down to 53 processes .. :)

but my HP laptop runs on 33 processes, so I'll have to get more creative.

Why don't you just do a clean install? This will elminate all the guessing what you need and dont need. This method would be the best if you want optimum performance.

My T61p should be here in a couple of weeks and I'm going to do a clean install for sure.

Pretty much same spec as myself. Clean install is the way to go for max performance.

can I do a clean install of XP Pro with the recovery CDs ??

I'm asking because I'm afraid that it will still put all those thinkVantage programs that I don't want, and will again create the 5gb partition on the HDD

No. The recovery cd's will restore your computer to FACTORY settings just how you received it when you opened it from the box. It will have the hidden partition in there too.

Nice machine, enjoy. If you search the forums, another member provided a link to a site where someone did several config scenarios as far as running processes --- full boat, average, and very minimal. I will try to find the link and repost on this thread. Somewhere in the high 30s or low 40s sounds about right. Not all can be blamed on ThinkVantage, a number of them are XP/Vista core services.

Enjoy your new machine, looks pretty nice!

got the processes down to 50 (those move from 51 to 49), but I need to install some stuff so I expect to end up with like 55 or so.

and I still don't like that 5gb partition on the HDD

    - gsrthomas, do you have integra GSR ? .. cause I'm with Turbo Civic, lol

Are you going to do a clean install? Thats really the way to go.
