    Hi everyone,
I could really use your help. I have a T42 which is about 3 years old. In just the last week I've begun to have a major issue with the display. The computer usually boots up normally, however, when I physically move the computer the image goes black and no matter what I do it won't come back on. Even if I leave it still very often the image will go out.

There is no crack in the screen and it hasn't been dropped, beat up, etc. I tried to attach an external monitor but when I do the image goes black on the laptop and nothing is picked up on the external screen.

I feel like this is a problem with the video card but I'd like your advice on how to trouble shoot and, if the video card does need to be replaced, how I would go about doing so myself.

Any and all help is EXTREMELY well appreciated.

    Thank you!
    Greg

I'm pretty sure that you've been hit by the well-known and documented GPU defect that plagued many early T4x series users. My dad's T40 was affected twice already by it, it's a fairly widespread issue.

Edit: Here's a thread at the Thinkpad forums documenting the case.
