    Hi,

I'm looking at buying a Lenovo notebook and I just want to confirm what I will getting with each of the (confusing) OS choices on lenovo.com:

    a) Genuine Vista Business and XP pro recovery DVD - I will get Vista Business installed on my laptop and a DVD with XP pro.

    b) Genuine Vista Business downgrade to windows XP pro - I will get XP pro installed on my laptop, no recovery DVD and on hidden partition is Windows Vista Business.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks!

make sure you get the first option of having a physical recovery discs and not the second. The second option will leave in heartache and headache too....

I ordered a ThinkPad R61 for work a few months back and selected 'Genuine Windows Vista Business with XP Professional Downgrade'. The R61 arrived with XP Professional installed and the media (CD/DVD) to upgrade to Vista Business at any time in the future, if I chose to do so.

A copy of XP Professional on CD was NOT included, however. Like most other major computer manufacturers, the hard drive had a separate "recovery" partition. The partition included the files to reinstall XP Professional, all factory installed programs and/or restore the system back to factory settings (new).

I just took a look at the current ThinkPad R400 and SL400 on the Lenovo website. Both offer the Vista Business downgrade to XP Pro and the R400 additionally offers Vista Ultimate downgrade to XP Pro. I don't see the option "a" that you describe.

My machine has worked great and I'm so thankful that I got XP Pro. Some of my colleagues have similar laptops with Vista Business. Anyone who chooses XP Pro instead of Vista Business is dodging quite a bullet, at least in my opinion. :D

    Thanks for your comments!

I think I'll take the Vista Business with Windows XP recovery dvd option. I've got a number of XP compatible software and will probably install XP after trying out the notebook with Vista Business.
