because it looks like a lot has changed since my W520 days! I purchased a Thinkpad L530 with Windows 8 and was wondering if it's just my system, but there does not seem to be a product sticker under the machine or battery compartment telling me what my product key is. What do I do should I need to re-install Windows 8??

Not digging Windows 8 at all and wanted to go back to Windows 7, but I'm told I would need to purchase a Windows 7 license to do so... not that big of a deal, but since I have Windows 8 already I figured I might as well make the system recovery discs like I did when I had Windows 7 on my W520. Problem is, I can't find such a utility on this new machine. Does Lenovo still include a system image on the systems or allow one to create the recovery discs anymore?

Looking at the partitions on this new system, the first few are sized 1GB, 260MB, 10.19GB, and 2GB. Anyone have any idea what the purpose of these partitions are? They're all empty according to Windows 'Computer Management' and are hidden...

Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak:

How to create recovery drive in Win8:

    1. Open the Start screen

    2. Type "create recovery"

    3. "Create a recovery drive" appears in the list of results, under "Settings" (or simply run RecoveryDrive.exe)

    4. Follow on-screen instructions.

    Notes:

    A. RecoveryDrive.exe is a native Win8 tool. It works in conjunction with the recovery partition that is installed at the Lenovo factory.

    B. The recovery partition can be deleted after making the recovery drive (in fact RecoveryDrive.exe prompts you to do this at the very end of the process).

    C. It is only possible to create the recovery media to USB memory key that is 8GB or larger. CD/DVD is not an option for Win8. The majority of Win8 systems do not have CD/DVD.

    Good luck.

If you don't like windows 8 get a startmenu alternative and it works just like windows 7:

IMO no need to install windows 7.
