    Hi all - help please. I know nothing about windows and my T440s
    is suffering from disk errors when sata link power management is
    turned off an on (specifically, when plugging in ac after being on
    battery).

    I think this is a hardware fault. So I reinstalled windows 8 and need
    to know how to control sata power to try to reproduce the problem
    in windows.

    I have the lenovo supplied 512gb ssd

    But when I open the power control settings (advanced settings in power
    options) there are no HIPM/DIPM settings under the hard drive tab.

    Should I not see a "AHCI Link Power Management - HIPM/DIPM" setting?

    I'm pretty lost here and any advice would be welcome.

    answering myself, I found a registry change that reveals the HIPM/DIPM settings;

    now, how do you tell what setting is active at any given time?

    further investigation turns up this in the output of powercfg -energy:

    anyone else see this? is it relevant to sata power management? TIA
