Hey everyone, what I believe to be a random error has left me optical drive-less, severely cutting down the functionality of my T61. After booting up one day, I opened Computer seeing only my internal and external hard drives and missing the DVDRW drive. The Safely Remove Hardware taskbar icon shows my external drive and "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N ATA Device at Location 0" with the yellow triangle exclamation point error symbol. "Update driver software" in the Device Manager fails, and Properties states "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I have searched high and low for the correct drivers to no avail, and even with the driver files, I think I would need a short, little How-To-For-Dummies. Can you help in anyway? Also, can I reduce Vista continuously asking permission for commands I give it? Thanks in advance to the kind and wise!

    Adrian

    1. I would go into Device Manager ATA / ATAPI Devices and uninstall the IDE channel which the ODD uses, then redetect the hardware. This often clears ODD connection problems.

    2. One way to suppress the UAC is to run MSCONFIG then go to the bottom of the list.

An error in my Nero install was the culprit, and the solution is merely a quick registry edit.

    Hi,
I recently discovered the same problem on my Toshiba Sat. U305 with HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N ATA Device. However, I tried to download the Helped Guide but nothing happens when I run the program (yellow triangle is still there in Device Manager). Can anybody help me with this?
    Thanks,
    David

Thank you BrianA, your direction to the microsoft site cured my Vista problem as well.

After the idiots at lenovo told me I had to re-image my hard drive to fix the problem, I was about to downgrade to XP (I still may.) so thank you again!
