Help - business user upgrading from my r61 to either a t510 or w510. I do lots of excel etc. plus want to do some home video editing (not able to do that on my r61).

My question is what processor do i shoot for being a complete computer noob? Last time i picked one up i just bought the fastest one i could and the most ram.

But now I see the higher end computers have lower processors (1.6mhz)...so i am clearly WAY over my head here and the technology has moved well past me. When I ran the Intel checker it said i should get a 1.6mhz processor WHICH is less than my current one - which is far too slow

Any help guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Why can't you edit videos on your R61? It should be more than powerful enough for basic editing. I did video editing on an old Turion 64 single-core running at 1.6GHz and it worked fine.

But I think your main problem is that you judge CPUs based on clock speed, and that's not the main consideration anymore. The W510 has quad core processors that, while they are lower-clocked, run "faster" than the dual core, but higher-clocked CPUs in the T510.

That said, though, the T510 will more than suffice for your needs--I'd recommend the i5-520M T510 with 4GB of RAM, possibly with discrete graphics.
