    Hi all,

Bought a Lenovo X61 about 10 months ago, and in the space of about 2 days both its battery and hard drive have packed up…

I’ve done some searches and figured out that I could probably salvage the data by putting the notebook hard drive into an external enclosure and pulling the files off by using a second computer.

I’ve managed to access the files on the old drive. Lenovo won’t let me keep the drive when they give me the new one, so I have to store all the files on a 3rd drive and then move them back to the new drive when I get it (and have to hand over the old drive).

I’ve ordered a 320gb Wetern Digital passport to act as a temporary 3rd drive and then serve as a backup going forward.

My X61 came with Vista Ultimate, and the new drive should arrive with it preinstalled (Lenovo wouldn’t give me XP). I’m using an ASUS XP-based machine I bought about 3 or 4 years ago at the moment.

I’m assuming the only way to transfer the files from the old drive to the Passport is to hook up both the old drive and the new passport drive to the USB ports on the ASUS. What is the best (i.e. fastest and safest) way to move the files? Use file manager, or some other program?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Actually moving files is rather easy as a net transfer. You'll get the file manager behind the scenes.
