My old Dell Inspiron 1318 from late 2009 is breaking down and I need a new laptop. I am disgusted by the new chiclet keyboards which every contemporary laptop features. However, it seems as if I got no choice then to accept the new keyboard design. I am also running Linux and I heard the Symantec touchpad drivers are horrible under Linux

I got a few simple requirments for my new laptop, it have to have separate Page Up, Page Down, Home and End keys. Preferably I like them in a column at the right side of the keyboard. I would also like to have physical mouse buttons.

    Thinkpad X1 Carbon
    Positives features:
    • Physical mouse buttons
    • Accutype keyboard
    • 14" screen in 13" chassi
    Negative features:
    • Fingerprint scanner and Thinkpad logo is uncomfortable to rest ones palm against
    • Reports of shoddy build quality

    Ideapad Yoga 2 Pro
    Positive features:

    • Page Up, Page Down, Home and End keys at the correct location
    • High Resolution screen
    Negative features:
    • Yellow is still an issue under Linux
    • Touchpad without physical mouse buttons

I am not an fan of the Thinkpad touchpoint so that is nothing I am taking into consideration. I just want a lightweight computer that will last me more than 4 years and have an acceptable keyboard. Any pointers would really be welcome.

I get the feeling you won't like the keyboards in either of these "ultrabooks." The thinner the design, the less key travel you will have typically. A pain to do a lot of typing on in my opinion. Also they completely rearranged the X1 keyboard. You can however get a lightweight computer that is not so thin.
