I ordered my T61p with the 80GB 5400 RPM hdd. I'm going to take it out and convert it into a external hdd.

Right now I have my eyes on this one.

200 GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA Internal Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor for Dell Inspiron 1521 Laptop

I really don't want more than 160GB of storage space but this one has some impressive specs.

Will this work with a T61p?

    My budget is around $130.

I'm open to buying a better hdd if it is within 5% of my budget.

Apparently that Dell HDD is the Seagate 7200.2 200GB HDD. So if you'd like reviews on the Dell HDD, you can look at reviews of that Seagate model.

I bought a 320GB Samsung HDD on NewEgg and have been very happy with it. It benched a vista experience score of 5.4 compared to the 80GB stock drive's 5.0.

I've only had it and my T61p for a week though, so use your best judgment.

I have a T61p a few months back, now using a T61. Both machines I took out the Hitachi 7K100 and plug in 7K200 100GB drives which is very quiet and in my opinion the fastest in the market.

If you get one from ebay, it's only around $75 to $85.

    The Hitachi Travelstar's are impressive.
According to Hitachi's WEB site they make a SATA 300 model.
However I havn't found it for sale on any WEB sites.

I think you are talking about the Samsung M6:

That is very nice. 5400 RPM that performs very well. I was checking out the benchmarks at Tom's Hardware and it did very well.

Right now it seems like the Dell/Seagate option I posted is the best choice for decent performance and more than enough room for storage space.
I'm going to order it soon.

I'm hoping SSD technology pricing comes down soon. When it does I'll get a SSD.

Then I'll put the Seagate in my PS3. :)

    Hope it works.

Good luck with the purchase and install. Hope you enjoy the new Seagate HDD, I was going to suggest the Hitachi brand as well. But both Seagate and Hitachi are good HDD manufacturers, imo.

Yeah. I've been pretty happy with it so far. Even though it is a 5400 RPM drive, it runs at the top of the 7200 RPM pack. Greater density seems to make up for rotational speed in this case. Programs keep getting fatter. The space doesn't hurt.

So, I'm one week out from getting the T61p and the drive and they've both dropped in price by >10% from what I paid. *thud*

    Your mileage may vary.
