I believe that is the partition that the Thinkpad boots off of, and it contains various recovery and diagnostic tools. Do not delete it.

Also, just for your information, you will not be able to use switchable graphics within Windows XP, so keey that in mind before you switch from Vista.

If you have burned your Rescue and Recovery discs, you can delete the SERVICE003 partition. It contains exactly the same material as the discs and does the same thing: allows one to restore the computer to factory state. The partition simply allows the convenience of doing so by pressing the blue ThinkVantage button at startup and not having to use the discs.

Many people delete this partition to get the additional space as I have done (who needs the duplication with the discs? ). However, if you do so, the blue ThinkVantage button will no longer do anything at startup.

Be sure to burn your Rescue and Recovery discs before you wipe the partition, because if you are converting from Vista to XP, this is the only way that you will be able to restore Vista (for example, if you need to so so for resale).

Also, before you overwrite Vista with XP, please use this application to capture your Vista license number. Surprisingly, it is different from what is on the sticker on your computer and you may need it later.

    Best of luck!

Actually, I think the Rescue and Recovery partition (which is burned onto the recovery DVD set that you can make) is the partition entitled "Lenovo", with the drive letter Q by default. "SERVICEV003" is different, I believe - in GParted, I think it's the only partition (including C) that shows up as bootable.

I kept it. It's small and I think it has the MBR.

I too had already faced such a situation last time but luckily I got a recovery tool stellar phoenix partition recovery which is quite effective and fruitful. This software is very simple to use. User interface of the software lets the less technical skilled users to achieve an absolute partition recovery.

I recommend that you dont delete that. its the files Lenovo uses to reboot. If you delete that, you'll need to insert a recovery disk to reboot your T400...then the partition just comes back i believe.
