I know this machine is older than many of you posting here.

I went out to Crucial's website, and via their memory tool, determined that my A21e (2628-J1U) could handle up to 512mb RAM.

Ordered the memory, received it, inserted, booted, and was told that my configuration only supports 256mb RAM, even though it detected the 512 in the memory test.

Is there anything I can do to this old thing to make it take the 512?

It's not life or death, but the extra memory would sure be nice.

Have you checked if there a BIOS update available for it? That's about all I can think of. Where do you see the error message?

Have you seen it work elsewhere? The official spec according to Lenovo is 256MB. If you grabbed the latest BIOS and it's still not working, I'd say the chances of it working aren't great. Crucial may be confusing the A21e with other A21 models which could accept 512MB of memory. Your other choice is to grab some different modules, but I'd say your chances are slim.
