Hey.
I am far from being a computer geek, to say the least.
I am so bored - so bored! - that I want to go WIN 7. That's honesty.
I'm running XP now, and would like to upgrade (i guess).
Is there something I should know?
When I run the 7 installation, I want to start the process, but don't have the courage to go through with it. I am worried about them Drivers and stuff.
But I do have all my data backed-up on my Lenovo laptop - as it came this way from the factory, RIGHT?
So I am thinking, let's say I will install the 7, and then I will see that - hey, this ain't good, I will simply restart the system, press that Lenovo button that looks like an orange tool box, and will tell him to re-install my XP. RIGHT?
I will appreciate your help!!!
(PS - am I to expect a faster running computer with the 7? )

i pretty much followed this, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=144783&highlight=clean+install. For my W7 build 7077 install and it has been working very well.
Since you have XP I believe you can skip the ABR part. -
Don't expect a radically faster or slower machine.
-
Well it certainly won't be that much faster, you may notice some differences in speed here and there, but overall Windows XP on your config is about as fast as it gets.
If you have a laptop that has the Lenovo factory restore partition then yes, you can press the option to put it back to factory default. That will lose any customizing or tweaking you've done since however.
Windows 7 is pretty good about having quite a few drivers built-in, but you have to track down any driver it doesn't detect and some are harder to find than others. It's really a trial and error process.
If you're just doing it because you're bored, then have it, because you surely won't be bored once you start the process -
You probably should wait for the Release candidate (Build 7100).
If you have an MSDN or Technet subscription you can get it now. The general public can download it on Tuesday 05 May 2009 from the Windows 7 site.
For the most part I have found driver support in Windows 7 to be quite good. Most things are detected automatically and you can generally use Vista drivers for things that are not. There's a few issues with the ThinkVantage software and very specialized devices (e.g. Fingerprint readers), but on the whole support is very good for a Beta OS. -
What about SOUND?
After reading your responses I felt more comfortable making the move. First thing that was missing was the Nvidia driver. Installed it by downloading it from their website, and choose the VIsta option. Works great now.
But - i don't have sound. I downloaded the driver from Lenovo website (because I have no idea what company made my sound car, as it only says ""High Definition Audio Device"), and again, as choose the VIsta option, and no go. Still don't work.
Any suggestions on that?
thanks -
Ok sound is now on. I don't even know what I did, but it's on (-:

Windows 7 runs great on my T60. No driver problems, not really any problems at all.
-
FWIW, 1GB RAM is a bit on the light side for Windows 7—and performance will likely suffer as a result. I highly recommend at least 2GB with Windows Vista or 7.

BinkNR is right.....

does win7 32 bit still have the 3 gb ram limit?
-
I think properly speaking it will always have a total addressing limit of 4 gb and needs space for the exec itself. It requires about half a gigabyte for the exec meaning that it has about 3.5 gigs for the task execution. There is no way, it will ever have more than that.

Having serious problems with my NVIDIA. Every once and a while the screens flickers black and back, and the windows action center tells me that it recovered it. But it happens once an hour or so. Guess bad driver or something. Any help on that?
thanks -
Video card? Actually it can be said that it happens when I put a bit of a strain on the system. But minor - let's say i'll use the Alt-Tab and 1 out of 10 times it will cause the system to flicker as mention.
Can you tell me, then, what does it mean if it's the Video card?
Thanks ! -
By the way, when I try to look up for updates, windows update do find an update, but can't install it.
Look at the attached file as well.Attached Files:

Hi there,
Your system is already running vista. I would not worry about any video under these circumstances, I'd just worry about the installation now. If it still does it when the software is installed worry about it then. The hardware will still be there. It is wrong to assume that the current version of Windows will still be there when you are finished unlaess a couple of extra steps are taken at installation time.
