My thinkpad just crashed. There is no response to any actitities. I pushed the power button but it did not response either. I disconnect the power supply but it still run on battery. It seems the only way left is to remove the battery. Is it okay to remove the battery when the laptop is still on? Or any other way I can try?

Ummm, it's a ThinkPad right? Isn't there the "blue" button; that is suppost to help the system recover from crashes? They made a huge comerical/advertisment about this feature!

holding in the power button for 5 seconds should force the power off, if for some reason this is not happening then that's certainly not a good sign. Removing the battery will of course put an end to power, it's not recommended but if it's your only option then do it.
